I suppose it’s not the most normal thing to go out with friends on a sunday evening to drink a beer at a bar. I know I don’t normally do it. Last night was the exception. Due to not having time to do a random excursion – finishing up some music for a meeting tomorrow – I ended up going to meet with my friend Jesse at a place called Bodega in Santa Monica.
I had never been there before, but it’s a rather nice little joint. Seems that on sundays they have half price beers and some games at each table. When I arrived, Jesse and Brent were knee deep in a dice game called Jackpot. I had never seen or heard of it before so I was given a quick rundown of how the game works as Jesse grabbed me a Newcastle Ale. If you haven’t played it, it’s quite fun. During the course of the game rules are created that have to be followed.
One such rule was when someone won Jackpot, they had to go ask someone else in the bar to join us in a game. In short order I won a Jackpot. I spotted a lone person to ask, his name was Mark. All the other people were paired up and none of the women there looked very inviting. So Mark joined us for a brief while. Another rule came up where I had to ask the waitress to join us for a game. She did. Shortly thereafter we got treated to a drink from her which was really cool.
In the whole place the three/four of us where smiling, laughing and generally having a great time. We were getting stares from lots of the other patrons. 🙂 That’s the best part, as you know you’re having much more fun than they are.
Which is what got me to thinking about the tune you’re hearing now. A classic from an era gone by. The Beach Boys. Chances are you’ve heard this song. If you haven’t and you’re older than 15, you’ve probably been hiding under a rock. You can’t help but love the blues rock intro ala Johnny B Goode. Then as it shifts into the classic Beach Boy vocal harmony, watch out. It takes you in and it doesn’t let you go.
Go on out and have yourself a ball, even if it’s a wet monday!
