There are times when I wish I wasn’t educated, full of reason and logic. It sucks when it comes to being creative and not wanting to get ripped off. I realize it’s never cool to rip off an artist. Problem is it happens all the time. Artist who become fortunate to hit the big time while being a bit ignorant often have to learn the hard way after the fact. I’m finding it’s even harder for those musicians that realize what’s going on before hand. It’s painful to turn stuff down knowing the deal is horrible and knowing that deals are harder to come by.
And so it is.
Regardless, I’m starting to wonder about several of the things I’m currently doing. One of those things is Single of the Day. I’ve been doing it for quite a while now and I’m very much wondering if I’ve jumped the shark. I’m coming up on having been doing this for four years and I’m often finding myself getting behind in getting posts out on time. More music coming across my speakers is starting to be less appealing. I’m not an A&R guy but I can really understand the plight of the industry in a way. There is an extreme amount of mediocre music, a vast amount of good music and an even smaller pool of great music. It’s insane to think that in the day of technological advances that music can still be recorded poorly. Even more insane to think that evermore “writers” are not bringing better music to the table. I’m sure a University could do a study on it and find out. I can’t reason it right now.
I’m also hearing from several friends who are all wanting to get rid of drama in their lives, along with attempting to make things better for themselves. It’s a great concept. I certainly think a lot of people are doing exactly that right now.
The song today by Depeche Mode called Freestate is less about the lyrics and more about the vibe of the music feeling very dark and mysterious and floating. It’s a more modern vibe for Depeche Mode. A haunting vocal, some of their signature synth sounds and even some dobro and other stringed instruments that you wouldn’t normally hear from them.
Enjoy and may you not continue to float in space.
