Well I was out last night at a friends birthday party. Whew, what an afternoon and evening. I woke up and realized I hadn’t setup my blog for today. That’s what’s happening when you’re running around like a madman. Let’s recap for a second while you’re playing this song. First I did a photoshoot for my new ‘look’. Afterwards it was off to a friend of mine’s last BBQ because his apartment building is being raized to make way for a new Condo complex (very sad considering this artdeco building was built in the 20’s and is amazing). Then after some fantastic meat flown in from Oklahoma it was off to Hermosa Beach for the birthday party for a friend that is the second longest running friend I have. I got home around 3 a.m.
I wake up and check the inbox and across my desk comes a band called White Silver. Now realizing that I’m still new to this blog thing, I had set up some rules. While they’re not really officially posted around here, one of them was that music has to be on iTunes in order for me to post it here. However, this morning – being Sunday, I’ve make a change in the rules (sorta). I will consider a song that isn’t on iTunes for a “Sunday Single of the Day”. Shit, maybe I should call it Sunday’s Child, though it really ought to be on Wednesday for Wednesday’s Child. Why? when I was a growing up in Park City, I remember a local news station doing a special featurette on Wednesday evenings for foster kids that needed a home. They called that kid Wednesday’s Child. But this is music and its my blog, so I’ll make it Sunday’s Child. Don’t expect me to do this every Sunday, but I will consider music that isn’t on iTunes for this day. Though I did tell them they need to get themselves to CD Baby asap and sign up for digital distribution. So maybe if you’re reading this as an archive, there may now be an iTunes link.
Ok enough of that crap, what do I think about this song and why did I choose it. First off, it’s impressive. I very much like their sound on this song called Get Up. It didn’t hurt that was also what I was attempting to do. They have a modern sound that I believe very much fits into the “young male” ideal for upbeat-super-energetic-slightly-aggressive-I’m-ready-to-take-on-the-world type of mentality. One of the first things that popped into my head was that I like energy, but more so some of the anthemic singing that I can envision a crowd of people getting into with this.
After hearing the song I decided to visit the website and hear some of the other material. Get Up! is certainly the strongest song on the EP that they have on their website, so I think it’s a wise choice on their part for leading me off with this song. The other clips are very good too, however I think they’ll have some trouble with getting compared to Incubus. I could hear a tinge of Brandon Boyd’s voice in White Silver’s singer (I couldn’t find his name on their website) in Get Up. But the similarity is way too strong in the other songs, not mention that the music, while very smart and well performed, also sounds a lot like what Incubus might do. Is this a bad thing? Not necessarily, but for me I really like it when you hear the inkling of that, not a full influence like that. I also prefer a little more variety from song to song in terms of arrangement and instrumentation and while I understand that all the songs on the EP are different, they still have a bit too much sameness to them.
But I digress. I would love to share the stage with these guys because despite that, they obviously rock. It will be interesting to hear what they come up with once they step out from the influences and really do their thing. Until then, enjoy this premier edition of “Sunday’s Child”.
I’m late in commenting, I know. I just wanted to say that I enjoy reading your “flow of conscienceness” (is that even a word?). While it may be an unexpected exit off your highway of thought, it’s a nice scenic drive, and one I enjoyed.
