I figured that it would be fun to look at something that probably hasn’t been seen in quite a while. Well, not since probably 1980. Xanadu. A quirky movie that starred one Olivia Newton-John. Ms. Sandra Dee (sic) of Grease. There’s a really big difference between those two roles. One has the cool of 50’s, the other has the what the hell of the 80’s. I think the style of Xanadu is a little strange. It’s a mash-up of 70’s disco with neon fashion from the valley girl. Didn’t Nicholas Cage do some movie about that?
Is this movie on DVD? I may have to hit blockbuster to find out. I’m trippin’ on this scene I found on YouTube. I’m attempting to scan my memory banks to figure out if my Dad did artwork for this movie or not. I should call him and ask, but I’m feeling lazy. I’m certainly open to renting the movie and attempting to understand what possessed someone to make a movie like that. What I can’t fault is the songwriting. Jeff Lynne and ELO. If you haven’t gone back in time to explore his songwriting and production capabilities, do yourself a favor. Get some perspective and see where some great pop music got lost in the shuffle.
Olivia was a hottie. Now that I’ve typed that I went to her website. She’s still damn fine looking for an older woman. What a career she’s had. Multiple genres of music with major awards in all of them. A crossover artist with several films. Wow. From what I’m reading up about her she also seems like a really cool down-to-earth person to boot too. Simply amazing.
As cheesy as the song seems, I really like it. But what’s not to like. It’s expertly crafted, it’s well produced, and sung with a beautiful voice. I have one question: What the hell is it about? I’m sure it’s kinda defined in the lyrics. I gather that this place Xanadu is some sort of magical place. But I don’t get much more about it than that. I suppose I should just go rent the movie.
