There aren’t many times when I attend an event where I really have a strong desire to walk out. However, there has been one movie in my life that I actually did walk out of. There are two that I have wanted to walk out of. One of those two movies was at Sundance. The second was at an event I went to last night, oddly enough the movie last night played at Sundance recently. The trouble with private screenings or rare screenings of movies, people know who’s there and it’s poor taste to walk out.
The main reason for going last night, not knowing anything about the movie, was for the sound and the score. Both of which were more interesting than the movie itself. I have issues with movies where the acting is wooden and the story isn’t compelling enough to keep me interested.
The composer got lucky with being able to work so closely with the director. He was able to sit in on the dubbing, and controlling lots of the sound beyond the score. The process they used from the script to the end product with the score is actually quite different from anything I’ve ever heard of before. I would be interested in how early on John Williams was for Jaws, because that’s a movie that benefitted heavily from that simple 2 note phrase a minor 2nd apart. That’s the brilliance for Jaws. As for the movie last night, I think the idea of what they tried via the score thru the project to the final product is a brilliant idea that I plan to use with a friend of mine when he gets to his script for a movie it looks like I’d be scoring.
It was still good to go as I met some good people.
Striking my fancy today is Friday’s Walk by Blues Saraceno. A simple little instrumental piece fronted by a guitar. There’s a little walking bass line to hold down the bottom end and a snappy bit of drumming to lay down the beat. A rather somber piece that ends up picking up a little ways in. Then there’s some harmony leads. This is pretty typical in how a lot of shred type guitar things were done. The difference with Blues was his tone was very much uniquely him.
Enjoying it? Go get it!
