I read an interesting article this morning on CNN. It had to do with communication between males and females. It has to do with listening and not fixing. Which is something I know I have done many times, fix or at least offer suggestions. This apparently is one of the leading causes of miscommunication. If only. If only I learned this in school, so many situations could have been resolved with a lot more ease.
It’s been said that I’m really quite good at listening. But I know full well that there are people I tend to offer advice or go out of my way to help when I’m listening. The trick is to learn when the advice or help is called for and when it’s only a venting session that is to be listened to. Where is the rule book on that when you need it?
This could very well end up being the reason why I’ve had so many issues with some whom I’ve found important in my life. Especially right now.
An inadvertent thing happens for today because of this. I found a perfect song about the whole communication thing in Collective Soul. I’m not sure if I’ve ever run a band back to back on Single of the Day. Though I have now. You Speak My Language isn’t primarily about male to female, but it sure works. The whole thing where you feel like you’re not communicating on the same wavelength. I know that I’ve done that. I also know I’ve felt like I’ve not been in sync with talking to others.
The cool thing on this song from the get go is the drum pattern in the verse. It’s very non conforming in terms of a beat that would be a normal commercial beat. The snare is essentially playing at half time while other parts parts keeping the steady nature of the tempo and letting the triplet quarter note groove flow over the top. The guitars are sharp and precise. It’s got a very sly flow.
Then the chorus kicks in to hyper gear. Double time on everything. I get the vibe that is when you connect with someone and you’re both understanding each other. It feels like you’re on fast forward because you understand.
How about you? What’s your communication insights?
