I went to see a friend’s new band perform last night. She was pretty excited, it was their second show. I had actually seen the lead singer of the band a month or so ago while hanging out at her house one night. There was a group of musicians and at the end of the evening we had took turns playing songs and jamming.
I remember him because he was really damn good and soulful. (No today’s song is not him).
I recognized several of the songs last night as songs he had played acoustically when I met him. However, I felt his acoustic versions worked a whole lot better. When my friend Aubrey asked me my opinion last night after the show, I didn’t lie, I let her know that I felt the band needed his acoustic guitar playing more than his electric guitar playing. I also thought several of the intros to the songs were way to weird or off the mark for the song they belonged too. She took it all in without any issue. The Years they were called. I will say Niles is an amazing singer and has some cool songs, they’re almost there, but they need some honing. The band itself was quite solid so that was cool.
Today, I took on a couple of little projects around the house. Fixing a chair, cleaning up, making a killer breakfast of creamed eggs. Now it’s time to pick a spot on the map, throw it on the GPS and head out for a drive. Adventure time.
Because I’m thinking of adventure and getting out the door to somewhere else, it leads me to today’s pick by Erik Scott. Other Planets. If there is a title that suggests getting out the door to somewhere else better, I haven’t thought of it today. Erik has created an ethereal little space here.
There’s elements of electronica mixed with some tribal stuff due to the drumming. The bass could be considered the main instrument here. As it should be for Erik, it’s his instrument. I’m not sure if I can put my finger on the influence that I’m hearing there, but it’s certainly got some cool effects going on. Not something you hear done on the bass very often. At least not me.
It’s not on any of the digital sites as of yet, so you’ll have to visit his website to find a way to get the song or the CD. In the meantime, enjoy and go out and have an adventure!
