I’d say that most of my friends know that I’m an avid skier. Now you know too. I grew up skiing in a ski town. In a house literally less than a football field from a chairlift and with a way to ski right down to the back side of the house. It’s fair to say that it definitely is a way of life. Or rather was until I moved to LA for music. Doesn’t mean that I don’t miss skiing. I still ski as much as I can.
Since I don’t have the luxury of skiing my way into shape, which is what I’d do if I weren’t competing. Oh, yes, I was a competitor too. As I was typing, since I don’t have the luxury to be skiing my way into shape, I now have to maintain some exercise regimen to keep the ski chops up. Which is probably why I subscribe to things like Ski magazine and Skiing magazine. Great ways for me to read up about gear, goings on, and get some tips on what the new exercises are for the next season.
I pretty much started my workouts again this week. Lifted monday. Ran yesterday, oh the legs aren’t as happy today. Lifted and did some other things today as well. One such exercise involves an exercise ball, my shins, and being prone in a push up position and rotating the hips. To even do five of those things is an instant aerobic rush.
In addition to my desire to get in shape to ski better, I also dig out my DVDs of some ski movies. That way I can watch big mountains get shredded by skiers that do things that I do, used to do, or would love to do.
Which leads me into today’s pick. I really don’t know when this song was released. All I know is that it’s the opening song to one of my favorite cheesy B ski movies. Oh you want to know the name of the movie? Ok. It’s called Aspen Extreme. Don’t yell at me when you rent it and realize it’s kinda like a sappy ski movie with funny characters. I still need to pick up Hotdoggin.
Anyway, when I hear this song come on in my library it instantly reminds me of that movie. Which instantly gets me pumped to go skiing. I can’t explain that. The power of music. Certain songs will instantly take you to a memory because it was the song playing when something happened in your life.
It doesn’t hurt that the song has a great bluesy vibe with solid guitar playing and a strong sense of a hook. Jude’s voice is also a really great match for the foundation being laid down by the music. The sentiment of the lyrics work for more than the movie that I relate it to. It’s a great song for anyone looking to get out of town. It all begins with starting the car and going for a ride!
This is a perfect addition for your road trip library. Get it now!
Ha! Aspen Extreme! We both know better off dead was our defining high school ski movie. That, and for me, Greg Stump’s Maltese FLamingo.
