I mentioned it yesterday, a movie that was coming out in limited release called The Cake Eaters. I had two reasons that led me to want to see it. First is the director, Mary Stuart Masterson. Second was the star, Kristen Stewart. So I got my buddy Mike on the phone and said, let’s go. The movie was playing at the Laemmle 5 on Sunset. What I got was a fantastic story that at times had me laughing, and at other times squirming a little bit. The star performance hands down was Kristen Stewart. I believed in her so much that I thought she really had that neurological disorder. Oddly enough I thought the end of the movie came a little quick, I could have watched a bit more of the story, post climax.
Don’t go expecting a huge hollywood production, this is an art film. But in my mind it was worth it. So a thumbs up from me.
Speaking of eating cake, or rather pie, (seeing has how math-heads are making the joke of 3/14 to be the day of pie; Much like how next month will be 4/20, for pot smokers), did you catch the Jon Stewart and Jim Cramer bit on Comedy Central. Why is it that the funny news shows of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert seem to make way more sense? How crazy is it to see Jon chastising Jim over how to present things like financial news and it makes sense? If you haven’t seen it, head over to comedycentral.com and check it out. We’ve been watching these CEOs take our work and get rich on it. Thankfully someone like Jon is raising the stink to out it out.
Which brings me to the band that is appropriate for today’s post based on their name alone – Cake. The thing about Cake is that they are pretty darn eclectic in their sound. Everything is slightly out of place in terms of being a polished vibe, but it works in the context of what they create. While the lyrics of the song describe a guy who is into a girl, the sentiment actually works for the story of The Cake Eaters as it relates to the family involved. Family should never abandon each other. Of course reality dictates lots of dysfunctional situations that leave some families in shambles. But when we can look past the rough edges there’s usually a sense of belonging in a family. Much like this song. Some parts seem so out of place, but once you get over that roughness, you realize it’s exactly what was needed.
I don’t know if I’d classify myself as a closet Cake fan, but so far I don’t think I’ve been disappointed by anything I’ve heard by them. It’s always different and they do have a very distinctive sound. That is something I really admire about them.
Don’t have it or them? Go explore. And for the love of all things musical, when is Apple gonna fix their iTunes links?
