Last night was an all nighter. What is it about January where it kicks the year off with staying up pretty late to celebrate the new year. So far it seems to be that I’m getting at least a second all nighter in the month of January every year. Last night my friend Robert Navarro and I spent the evening or the night writing a song that we ended up calling Cuppa Joe. Why would I do that in a last minute motion? I called Robert at 7 pm and said, hey there’s an opportunity to write a song for a commercial and it’s due in the morning, wanna do it?
Yes was the answer. So off I went to record.
Initially I didn’t think it would take more than a couple of hours. At least the parts I had come up with only took about an hour to do. But then came the writing part where we kept manipulating and writing. At 1 a.m. it was like, damn we’re hungry. So we took an hour break to eat thinking we could knock the last of it out in an hour. By 3 a.m. I was starting to pass out with my eyes open. By 4 a.m. I was sitting down to do the mix and by 4:45 it was done and on it’s way to the gatekeepers.
Whew, home by 5. Crazy.
Yesterday also saw the exterminator come out to my studio to work on ridding the crickets that had taken up residence. Once he did his thing we were standing outside chatting only to see an onslaught of crickets come crawling and hopping out of several spots to get out of the studio. Wow. That was wild to see. They couldn’t get out fast enough. Love that.
Ok, it ended up being and all night thing with the music, so I’m rolling with Temple of the Dog since they have a song called exactly that. All Night Thing featuring some of the best vocals Chris Cornell has done. A powerhouse of a band featuring members of many of the 90’s grunge bands. The only reason I actual have a copy of the CD is because of Chris. There is something about his voice from this era that really rocked.
The groove, the music, the flow, it’s the vibe that sells this CD. You can tell that they enjoyed themselves with the writing and the playing. A group of guys getting together to play and kick ass for the fun of it. At least that’s how I hear it.
You can’t go wrong with picking up this one.
