Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away…
There was a band that was cored by two people who were writing pop music in the vein of powered sugar pop. That band was Penny Racer. I know as I actually hung out with them and did some guitar parts for a demo at one point. They had a song in particular that was perfect for the people who are serious Star Wars fans. It’s the song you’re likely hearing right now, provided you’re at the website.
It’s all about a love story. A fictional love story yes, but a love story non-the-less.
I am a Star Wars fan. Yes, I am. I have all six on DVD. Of all the movies I’m quite sure that Empire Strikes Back is my fave. Then I think I’ll go out on a limb and say that Star Wars II (attack of the clones) is my 2nd pick. From there they all sorta blur together.
This is likely the reason why I took to this song. It didn’t hurt that I liked the vibe – despite it being a demo. I think secretly I would really like to pull them into the studio and do a full blown produced version with live drums, amped guitars and all the other accoutrements that go with something along the lines of a studio release.
In terms of how I’d view the lyrics, I’d say that I fit the Han Solo mode. And yes, I’d say that Leia was a hottie. Or rather Carrie Fisher who played Leia. Definitely a good choice for a princess. Probably a good part of the appeal of the original movies. The sexual tension between Han and Leia was what probably made that the best of all the Star Wars series. If I’m not mistaken it’s also the only one that Lucas didn’t direct. Not sure what to make of that.
The downside of this tune is that Penny Racer is no more. The band link above is to myspace page of the new group Kevin has around him called Checkpoint Charley. Maybe all y’all ought to bug Kevin to pull this song out of the mothballs and get it recorded in a full blown studio. I know I’d buy it. Wouldn’t you?
