If there is one thing about LA that is really cool about winter is that we get heat. This morning was a nice surprise when letting Dorian out. It was very warm. Shorts are the order of the day today. Then it’s time to head out to a workshop being put on by the LADWP about being more conscious about water use and such. The bonus is, that when I walk out, I will be able to get some free trees to plant around the house.
In the meantime lets get to some music.
Since I’m going on a green kick today I need to roll with something with green in the title. While I really don’t have a clue as to the concept of a green tinted sixties mind I’m a fan of the song. It’s a fun song.
When I first started learning to transcribe music this was the one of the first songs I had done. Not in tablature, but in full notation. Mostly because of that opening guitar lick. At the time I was attending a music school and Paul Gilbert’s good friend was one of the instructors. I showed him the transcription and he kinda looked at me like, damn nice job.
Fun is the vibe of the song. Straight up rock song with fancy guitar playing. That’s the method of Paul. A smokin shred guitar player that actually wrote a decent pop rock song. It was something that I aspired to. To this day I still like to throw in cool little guitar licks to things.
I wonder if that is something Paul does.
On a departure I recall a friend of mine who is considered a hired gun of a guitarist for some of the recent top female artists. He asked me about a CD I did not long ago. Asked if I had put any shredding on it and I replied no. It was on in the background and a particular song hit the solo. At the end of the solo his head whipped around and he said, that was shred right there. I guess I didn’t view it as shred, but I could see how it could be considered to be shred.
The better you get as a player the less you view what you do as something others can’t.
