Playing catch up. It’s been phone calls, messages and mail all morning. Time to get to Single of the Day before I can move on to a writing session with the infamous Will Champlin as well as putting some retouches on a cue for a film trailer that I was mentioning yesterday. As per a conversation with the editor it seems I was right and it will need a little tweaking, but happiness is it was very close to what they were looking for. Bonus! That’s part of the process when it comes to custom music pieces for things like film and tv, or in this case trailers.
Last night I had the chance to see a screening of the movie UP, the new Pixar/Disney movie. Yet again they’ve hit the nail on the head with a great movie that is thoroughly enjoyable to watch. The reason for the screening was to hear a talk with the movie’s composer Michael Giacchino. He’s on a major roll right now with several movies out all featuring his creations along with being a composer for the show LOST. So I know his music well considering I’ve seen ever episode of LOST as well as Star Trek and now UP.
He is a very personable person and does what some of my favorite people tend to do that suddenly see their star rise, they keep a group of musicians that they work with and take them along for the ride. I find that to be a great thing. I know that I have a bunch of friends that I would do the same thing for. As my sphere expands I add more people to it as well. In fact there is one deal I’m still waiting on that could prove to be somewhat fruitful. But nothing to say about it until there’s an answer.
In the effort of needing to push thru some reading and a lunch before Will comes to the studio, I need to get to the music…
I recently picked up a CD that I had been meaning to get for a while. And as it sits now, it’s already a hit. I’m betting you’re familiar with the name Maroon 5. They’re a pretty popular group and there is a good reason for that, they have some really amazing songs and no matter what is done about that it generally makes a band leap to the top.
I don’t think this song – Little Of Your Time – was ever really on radio, but it’s a fun song that reminds me a bit of Hey Ya. I haven’t looked up the producers for both tracks, but maybe they’re using similar people. I like the acoustic guitar riff that is obviously chopped up and made severely rhythmic in the track. Lots and lots of little production tricks going on. The solid flow of the beat is probably the cool thing about it all.
There’s little synth pieces going on playing little popcorn bits here and there. Tons and tons of layers, and as I’ve blogged about before it’s those high number of layers that tend to give a song a very complex nature that can hold a listeners interest. It certainly got my attention when I first heard it because it’s not in a particular key. Well, let me take that back, I mean that the song doesn’t stick to a singular key. The melody helps to hold that shifting key nature together quite well. Something that I dig.
If you haven’t picked up It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, you might want to check out the rest of the disc and reconsider. There’s a lot of fun stuff on the disc.
