For some reason I’m not a vacation planner. I suppose it’s because I’m not very good at vacations. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy time off. However, aside from a couple of set times in the year, one is around my birthday and the other is around Christmas, I don’t really plan vacations. I know that my sister and my mom plan them. Sometimes a year or more in advance. Which is great if I’m along for the ride.
For me vacations tend to happen. Like right now. I decided that I would go out of town last wednesday night, albeit for a little business and a little relaxation. Now that got sidetracked. I kinda ended up taking several days off. I’m still in Las Vegas right now. No, I haven’t been gambling. I must be one of the few people on earth that does not make it a point to come to Las Vegas and gamble. No, I think it’s because I know what gambling takes and aside from a new affinity for poker, I don’t care much to go sit in a casino without purpose. Call me crazy.
Though I am giving it thought today. Mostly due to the fact that I’m still hanging with friends but they’re doing some of their day job stuff and I’m sitting around cleaning up a few things in my world. Like taking care of Single of the Day for the today. 🙂 Still gotta do it.
Another interesting thing I’ve found is that a new co-writer of mine has a much more varied musical background than I actually thought. Femke Weidema, whom I’ve featured here a little while back, also has an affinity for hard rock and metal. Totally strange considering the fact she’s so feminine and writes a lot more pop oriented stuff. She expressed an interest in doing a blog part for Single of the Day or even her own blog in similar fashion. Based on some of the conversation we had the other night online, I’m tempted to say she really has a strong love of music much like I do. It drives her soul.
At one point I did think to have different people who specialize in a certain genre doing a Single of the Day every day. Though, I’m not sure it’s easy to find people dedicated to doing a daily blog. Femke might be a good choice. Rather than make it a specialized genre I think I’d start making channels – like the Jody channel and the Femke channel. Who knows, I will have to give it some thought. Actually I suppose it might not be a bad idea to find out from you the avid readers/listeners what you think. Would you be interested in reading and listening to another musician’s choices as well? Or would that splinter the idea of Single of the Day too much? Good question.
My connection to Las Vegas for today’s music is why I chose it. Last night I went to see Nick and Dave, 1/2 of the former Big Bad Zero band (that’s right, it’s no longer), as they were performing at Tahiti Joe’s in Tahiti Village. If you’re from Los Angeles and listen to the radio at all, then you’ve heard the relentless radio advertisements featuring various stars in the twilight of their careers pushing the “free” weekend getaways from Tahiti Village. It actually never dawned on me until I was in Tahiti Joe’s talking with Nick and Dave.
The first thing I will say is that the service in Tahiti Joe’s is less than stellar. I don’t like to knock on things, but when a person is sitting at a table attempting to flag down one of 5 waiters who ignore you for over 40 minutes, it’s not off to a good start. After three visits to the bar to ask the bartender if a waiter could come take an order, one finally came by. Don’t go to Tahiti Joe’s for the service. It’s not great and no wonder the parent company is offering free stays, I don’t think people should or would pay to be treated like that.
The music on the other hand sounded like it brought the environment up a notch. Nick and Dave now do acoustic sets around town and do quite well with a big repertoire of covers most people have heard of. Actually it’s the best I’ve ever heard Nick sound as a singer. Dave backs Nick up well.
In light of vacationing and me not planning them out it must be that I don’t read the signs of when I need one. I guess I’m either thrust into vacations or at the very least I’m very spontaneous about them. Hence why I’m still in Vegas. More good news came yesterday morning while still out in America and I ended up extending my stay. Maybe my signs are finally coming in. No, that’s supposed to be my ship. We’ll see. Still a few steps to be taken before things are defined and in place, but at least the waiting appears to be on the downside of length.
Are you waiting on a sign? If so, what? Could this song be the soundtrack for that wait? I think so. Go support Nick and Dave and the rest of the Big Bad Zero crew. Click a link and buy a track or CD. Have fun and I’ll see if I can’t hit a royal flush today.
