For those of us that are used to a white Christmas, I’m kinda curious to know if anyone has traveled to a tropical destination for the Christmas holiday. I’ve done it once with my mom, my sister and two other ladies. Nothing like world travel as the only guy in the group. Add to the fact that we were driving all over Mexico and I mean Mexico the country, not the slices of America in Mexico (i.e. Acapulco). Oh and I shouldn’t forget to mention that I’m 6’4″ and had bright shock red hair at the time of vacation.
We visited lots of little towns during our stay. Then finally ended up in Oaxaca where we got to witness the radish festival and do a bunch of shopping in the central market in the city. I love street vendor food there. Yes, I’m a brave soul.
The night of Christmas had us out in the church square where people were gathered to partake in the evenings festivities. People would have a bowl of some type of soup then when finished they take that bowl turn around and chuck it at the church to break the bowl. There were shards of shattered bowls piled everywhere from all the people that had done it. When in Rome, do as the Romans do right?
It’s a way different experience to be in an entirely different country for Christmas. I highly recommend that everyone take a Christmas holiday in a foreign country. It’s good for your perspective on life. I swear it.
Today’s ditty was written by a songwriting friend of mine. I met Harold thru an organization called Just Plain Folks. I heard Harold play the song and I immediately asked him if he had a copy that I could have to learn the song. I played it at my family party that year. They loved it. Which led me to a desire to include it on my big Christmas release. While I don’t feel like my version has the vibe that Harold’s does, the song still retains the humor.
Which why I’m playing Harold’s version. You can hear the idea and the quality of what Harold brings to the table as a songwriter and an off the cuff performer. This song really shines in that respect. It’s got a unique intro, a quality story, humor, great musicianship and a fun twist for an ending. All the way around brilliant.
Enjoy!
