I’ve fallen back and I can’t get up.
I understand the concept of daylight savings, but I’m not sure I ought to buy in to it. I stayed up late last night after catching a movie. Then some how woke up around 4:30 a.m. (post time change). I don’t like getting up early at all. So I started another movie. Eventually I fell back asleep. Only to wake up tired. Ugh.
Enough about silly hour differences. Lets talk about the movie. I took in Zach & Miri Make a Porno yesterday. Despite reading some terrible reviews I thought it would be fun to go see a Kevin Smith film. How far off base were the reviewers? I’m actually wondering if they even saw the movie, or at least the same movie I saw. In a short review I’d say this: Fucking Brilliant!
I mean that literally. Along with some the so-called ‘childish’ behavior was some seriously brilliant dialogue and witty banter. Even some very old-school quick exchanges that didn’t drag on like some of Kevin’s early material. I realize that I was laughing at more of the jokes than most of the people in the theater which was quite full. But then I was able to pick up on a lot of the quick exchanges that I think a lot of people missed.
There was one scene in particular that the entire audience got. An absolutely gasp inspired laughing moan that everyone emitted. Everyone, and I mean everyone reacted to it. It’s rare that such things happen across the board in a movie in a large audience. But that did it. When you go to see the movie, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
My buddy Mike was shocked that it wasn’t a rated X movie. Not due to what was shown on screen but rather the content of some of the dialogue. Not even so much the content but rather the context of the dialogue. I did read an interview with Kevin Smith that related to Zach & Miri Make a Porno where he admitted it originally got an NC-17 rating. They protested and it got pulled back to an R. It’s probably the most fair rating I’ve ever seen a movie get. It wasn’t even close to needing an NC-17 with visual nature – unless you’re a puritan type of prude who can’t stand see any skin.
When you go to see it, make sure that you stay all the way to the end of the movie and until the blue rating screen comes up. There’s a nice couple of surprises. It’s funny that people think I’m weird for sitting thru credits. But 90% of the audience last night missed something by walking out early on the credits. And 99% missed the very tail of it.
With that, I’ll leave you with a tune by Dan Reed. As you’ve probably heard by now it’s called Life Is Sex. A funky type of 90’s rockin’ thing. For the new readers of the blog, I mentioned Dan Reed sometime with a Sunday’s Child entry about year ago or so. I was typing about an excursion that I am planning. A long mountain bike trip. Turns out Dan had looked at the post and told me he wanted to be a part of that excursion. Which I think is pretty darn cool. I’m looking at making it a go for summer of 2009.
To get back to the music. I was turned on to Dan Reed by some friends out of vegas. They were full on fans and so I got his stuff thanks to them. Unfortunately some of Dan’s older stuff isn’t on iTunes or Amazon, the two big digital services. Thus I will suggest that you will have to visit his website and/or some CD stores to attempt to find copies of his material.
I do know that Dan is releasing a new CD and video. It’s called Coming Up For Air. I would think that it will be on digital services before too long. Who knows maybe Dan will allow me to showcase one of the new tunes here. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, enjoy your ‘extra’ hour of sleep if you observe daylight savings. As well, enjoy your wife, your husband, or your lover. Have some good natured human sex, you’ll feel more alive!
