A buddy of mine asked if my father would be interested in doing a label for his new product. I asked what it would be for and if they would be interested in doing a different type of deal than would normally happen for art. If there was one thing that always bothered me about the way most artists are treated, it’s that they’re asked to create something for a brand and then the corporation would own the art outright. Thus if the art helps the brand become a household name, the artists essentially gets screwed out of the profits for helping out.
Thus I prefaced it with, would you be willing to do a slightly different deal for the art? He asked what I proposed. So I mentioned that if he took a lower fee up front for doing the art and design, would they be willing to pay a royalty for every label printed. He looked at me for a moment and said sure. At that point I brought it to my dad and mentioned how it would work and he looked at me and said yes, that would be amazing.
Of course it would be amazing. He’s created some of the most recognized packages in history of modern culture and literally got little in return. I want to change that. This way, if my buddy’s product(s) become popular, my dad will continue to get compensation – which is how it should be. Of course the art would be exclusively licensed to the company and he retains his ownership as well. Again, as it should be.
The song for today will be by Mojo Mancini. It’s called Big General. I think the reason I’m rolling with it is because I feel like a general when it comes to getting a cut of the pie. Especially for my dad. He’s a brilliant artist. The cats from Mojo Mancini, have a vibe that I bet he’d enjoy. It’s jazzy, it’s progressive, it’s rocky, it’s snappy. I kinda think they’re drawing their name from the infamous Henry Mancini, but I could be wrong.
Either way, as I was listening I found myself wondering where the track would go next.
Is it commercial? Heck no. Is it cool. You bet.
