It takes time to get things sorted out sometimes. For me right now, I’m amazed at what kind of time it’s taking to get stuff completed around the house. Could be that I’ve pretty much been laid up for a while with the flu. Stuff like getting rid of pests such as crickets and rats. Oh the joy. I met an exterminator from New York whose name is Jody. That’s pretty strange. Anyway, I left him a message yesterday. I’m hoping he can fit me in to come and remove the pest problem today or tomorrow. It’s not fun hearing a rat gnaw on wood. It’s not fun attempting to record with crickets chirping away (unless you’re Buddy Holly of course).
So as I had been laid up with illness and wanting a change. I came across Ragani. She creates some very soothing sounds. While I don’t know much about music from India, I do know that it’s a fun change. Actually I really don’t know if the roots of this music even comes from India. I could be making a really bad assumption. In my limited exposure it tends to remind me of two movies, one is The Guru, and the other is Bend It Like Beckham. I suppose because the both have strong ties to India as part of the story line.
Anyway, the concept behind the music is to help you focus and organize. Usually not something I have a problem with, but since I’ve been down and out, I could use some positive energy to get me back on track. I like the shifting feel going on here. It speeds up it slows down. There’s a flow in the change of the energy. I also like the chanting. It’s soothing. The whole album has a good flow.
One thing I did want to make a nutty connection with is this. Ragani has a digital only song called Om mani padme om. What strikes me about it is the title itself. I own a DVD of a cheesy old school tech film called Wargames. It’s one of Matthew Broderick’s early films and for some dumb reason I really like it. Could be I’m a tech geek at heart. Anyway, in the very opening scene, two characters are talking as they are coming in to work and one of them is discussing a woman they met who grows somethink you smoke. Apparently the woman in question would chant that saying over the plants. I have absolutely no idea what it means. But it’s a nutty tie anyway.
