I feel like I’m in the middle of getting back on track despite the world dishing out some of the craziest stuff to put up with. I made an effort to clean some things up around the house. Stuff that had been lying around waiting to be put away for a couple of months. I think the break from routine on Sunday was a good thing for cleaning out the mental cobwebs on stuff I’ve put off for too long. See, Derek gave a little talk about priorities. I certain had a few that had been out of wack. It was time to Eat The Frog and get on with it.
Post clean up came time to get on top of e-mails to people I met over the last several days. Then came some phone calls to find out what else is happening. One phone call ended up being a clean up call stating I want to get the straight dope on the funding. I’m tired of not having the answer to the arrival date. Will that phone call set the right things in motion? One can wish. I have felt like I’ve been spinning my wheels for too long now.
I got through 98% of the music that was given to me on Sunday for Single of the Day. I have a few more things to get through. I think this is gonna be a good eclectic week for the blog.
Some time was spent mixing a song by an artist who came in last Thursday to record a song that was written for his sister’s wedding. He needed it last night so I put aside time to tweak it up and get it ready for his event. Overall I’m pleased with it. He’s pleased with it so, that’s a good thing. Because I felt like I needed to treat myself to a well made meal, I took two hours to make some pasta from scratch. That’s right, homie knows how to make homemade pasta. It’s a time intensive process but it is oh so worth it!
A little semolina pasta, some veggies, pasta sauce, and a house salad. Mmmmm, Mmmmm, Mmmmm. Yummy. Once you’ve had homemade it’s hard to enjoy the hardened store bought stuff. It doesn’t compare, it’s a different take on a classic.
Today’s song is a different take on a classic. There was something about it from the moment the sax started flowing through the speakers. I realize that the recording isn’t the most brilliant, but between the grooves there’s some serious playing going on by Gary Brown. I can’t tell how he’s gone about getting the track together, because it seems like it’s the chorus from the Aaron Neville version. Maybe it’s a minus-one type of arrangement of the song and thus is a way to achieve it as Gary has done.
Gary has a sweet sound. While I’m not a master of the intricacies of the sax, I cna appreciate it when someone can play one and make it sound decent. There’s a saying that comes to my mind. It’s more of a phrase really. I statement from a movie. Ever seen Eddie and The Crusiers? There’s two of those movies. Eddie and The Crusiers and Eddie and The Crusiers part two. Pretty simple like that. Anyway, Eddie had a sax player that died on him in the first movie. At one point in the second movie he is describing what the sax sounded like – a bell skipping across water (I’m paraphrasing). I’m not exactly sure what that would sound like, but it’s supposed to be amazing. I don’t know if Gary’s sax is like a bell skipping across water but you can tell I like it.
Gary was hit hard by hurricane Katrina. So show him some lovin by buying the song. If you’re a fan of this sound, he’s got a few CD’s out. Might want to mine them for more gems as well.
Gary Brown has a web site where you can hear more of his music. It is http://www.garybrownmusic.com
