Hmmm… It’s tuesday… Any connection about today and the band name… Hmmm…
Comic relief and suspension. Two of the many things that occurred yesterday. Lets start with the comic relief. I happened to finally catch Blades of Glory. I have to admit that the idea of the movie was not appealing. In the time since it’s been released the box office numbers don’t lie and friends that had seen it mentioned it. Uh, it can leave you speechless. Don’t go expecting anything and you should leave thoroughly entertained. There are moments that are so ridiculous that all you can do is laugh and there’s no doubt that’s the exact intent. Bravo Will and Jon.
Suspension. Leave it to an aging radio talk show host who was never all that good to begin with to wind up saying something stupid. The interesting thing about the Don Imus ordeal is that it was an off the cuff remark much like I spoke about yesterday with Natalie Maines. While I don’t care for Imus, I do so by choosing not to listen to him at all. I couldn’t tell you what station(s) he’s on. Nor, do I care. However, Had those very same comments been made by say Chris Rock there would be no asking for his resignation. Funny how people want free speech but are only willing to let it go so far. Personally, what he said was stupid. But to fire him for it? Well, it’s wishful thinking. I’m surprised he even got suspended. Reality check would have been that had no one said anything I wouldn’t have known Imus was even alive.
I think I was satisfied with the movie. I’m not satisfied about Imus. But since I vote with my wallet by not donating money to him, nor listen to him. I just as soon hope he goes away. I believe in freedom of speech and I believe the Political Correctness has gone to far. People say things, feelings will get hurt. It happens. Go see Blades of Glory and get over it with a laugh.
I spent a bit of time crusing through Starting Tuesday’s music the other day. This is the opening song off their CD which you can grab at CD Baby (click that CD cover). They cover a fair amount of ground actually. This is the most modern rock sounding track on the album that I sampled. It’s certainly the most catchy, but then a lot of the other stuff has catch to it too. Many gems in that disc. I think another reason that grabbed my attention about this song is the resolution of the vocal harmonies. I know that the guys from Starting Tuesday have likely never heard of a band called The Mustard Seeds. However, there’s what could be construed as a direct thieving of musical ideas. Don’t worry it ain’t. It’s got to be one of those common brain things.
It’s not a bad comparison either, The Mustard Seeds (whom I’ve talked about before) were started by the brothers Bissonette, Matt and Greg. Outside of the music industry, that doesn’t really mean much. But for those that are in the know, Greg is one of the best drummers in history that very few people know about. His brother Matt is no slouch on the bass. I was buds with several of The Mustard Seeds thanks to Jeff Soto. I’ve had some great moments of musical and poetic improvisation performing live with them, all very fun, sometimes comical. The song by The Mustard Seeds in particular is called Coming Up Roses.
I like the energy and surely love the resolution of the vocal harmonies over that chord change at the end of the chorus. It’s not common (I’ve now only heard it in two songs). That’s a plus in my book. Maybe, I need to steal the idea myself. It’s always good to borrow great ideas, and now that it’s a bit more common than one song… Heh. We’ll see if I ever get around to borrowing it.
As for the question in the song, Yes, I’m feeling a bit satisfied right now. I’ll feel even more satisfied if you, who is reading this now, becomes a fan of Starting Tuesday and buys their music. I’m betting you’ll feel satisfied to, and most certainly so with the band. Oh, they’d like you to know that they do have a myspace page in addition to the official site I linked above.
