Two nights ago, I attended a Grammy event for the holidays. A little mixer if you will. While there i met some really cool people that do a lot of work behind the scenes of the big stars. It’s always fun to meet people like that and chat of things like trips to italy and learning a language.
I ran into Daniel Ho whom I have met briefly before. He had his wife with him and Tia Carrere. Both are remarkably humble. Especially Daniel, despite winning several grammy’s for hawaiian music. Tia was surprisingly taller than I imagined she would be. A very nice person. I suppose you wouldn’t guess she was a movie star. I got the scoop on how Daniel and Tia have known each other for a very long time. They’re both from Hawaii.
It was extremely fun talking to them. Especially when you hear or read about studies of how happiness spreads among people faster than unhappiness does. It’s rare that I’m around people that smile as much as Daniel and Tia. It was insanely cool. It was like being around a couple of kids in a candy store. Rather refreshing actually. Nice, warm and genuine.
Which is exactly how I would describe this song – nice, warm and genuine. I think it shows the care they have for what they’re creating. I learned that Tia had to learn to speak or in this case sing the Hawaiian lyrics. I wasn’t aware that it’s a dying language and so few speak it now. I haven’t a clue as to what the song is about. But it really doesn’t matter because of how pleasant it is to listen to. Maybe if Daniel or Tia pop by the blog today they can post the lyrics or rather the translation below in the comments.
I really like the sound Daniel is getting out of guitar. Those intro notes are harmonics. Excellent use of them in a fashion that sets up a cross between a melody and the chords (otherwise known as an arpeggio). I get the feeling it’s probably a bit of a love song. At least that’s the feeling I get. What about you?
