Where does strength come from? What kind of strength is it? Well, I’ve seen a bit of strength yesterday. In a movie. A movie about a concert. Featuring a band called U2. I’m sure you’ve heard of them. Most of the planet has. Very powerful in their music and presentation of it. The movie is U2 in 3D. If you follow a little festival known as the Sundance Film Festival you may have heard of this movie earlier this year.
I’ve never seen U2 live. However, this is probably a fantastic way to do it. The idea of 3D is finally coming into reality as it relates to movie making. Whatever they did for the U2 flick worked extremely well. It really helped to get the enormity of their show. The massive light displays and screens. The size of the crowd. In fact, it was nearly overwhelming. I wish I had brought my ear plugs as the sound was about as deafening as a concert, I could tell as it was over that I was in an environment that was too loud for too long. What makes it all work is their presence and the dramatic vibe their music has. It’s nearly cinematic on it’s own.
As I sat there watching, I was getting all kinds of ideas in my head. Ideas for music production. Ideas for stage stuff I’d like to achieve with my own music. All part of that dream big type thing. I’d liken U2 to being the modern equivalent to The Beatles, in terms of how fans react and the sheer enormity of their fan base. It’s insanely huge. The reason why I garnered those ideas in my head as I watched is that I’ve had others telling me how cinematic a lot of the new material I’m working on seems to feel. It’s a very pleasing feeling and makes me feel like I’m taking it in a good direction.
It takes strength. Strength in numbers and ego.
Speaking of strength, only here it’s about strength between two people in or out of love. Today’s choice came to me from a little bird that found my blog. That bird tends to send me several artists to check out at a time, so it’s a good thing. David has an easy vibe. Nothing to threatening about him. Initially the song title reminded me of Tal Bachman. Tal had a fantastic album with a song titled Strong Enough as well. Both songs are about tough relationships in love.
David has a very John Mayer vibe about his vocal production. Super present, very breathy. The song starts very unassuming then kicks into a really nice chorus with the line: But Love’s Great Reward… It’s a flowing melody that lifts up. That hooked me.
There are elements of the song that feel too compressed and I do feel like I’d like to hear him rip into with a violent fervor, that’s merely a preference I’d had. If the song came on the radio I wouldn’t be looking for the dial to change it. The song works and that’s a good thing. Now, go find your strength!
