The infamous line of old gin joints…
Why did you have to come in to this one? I believe that’s how it generally finishes off.
Another great line to add to that would be: Be careful. When you dig up the past, all you get is dirty. Not so much add, but parallel. There’s usually some sort of qualifier for that gin joint thing as a character remembers why. Of course going into the past can be exactly that – a mess.
So why is it that Time Travel is so fascinating?
If you’re like me, you’ve likely dreamt about the possibilities of going into the past or even the future. There’s usually some event that would be nice to revisit or do differently. Then seeing what you turn out like in the future could be fun too. The truth is, it’s never the destination, it’s the journey. With that idea in mind, it’s easier to understand why it would be better to go back in time – it’s already part of the journey.
Put the thinking cap on. Do you remember you’re first introduction to alcohol? I can remember a couple of instances and not due to blacking out. I think I was about 10 when I remember a friend of my parents giving her child (probably around 2) a sip of beer. I didn’t understand why though. I do believe my first real taste of beer came from a river trip down the Colorado river I took with my dad around 15. I was curious. He had an open beer and I asked about it. He said that it wouldn’t likely taste good, that it was an acquired taste. Naturally as a youngster you reason why would anyone want to acquire a taste for something that isn’t yummy off the bat.
Step two. He allowed me to take a swig. Yuck! He was right. It tasted awful. Nothing like the Coke-a-cola I was so used to. I didn’t ask any further beyond that.
In retrospect it may have been a good thing. I don’t think I had my next drink of beer until University. Even now, I still don’t really like to drink to excess. Especially not on beer. However, the taste is no longer as disgusting as I have gotten used to it. As you have to if you’re going to drink it.
That’s the entire point of today’s song Poison. I’ll not forget seeing Chuck perform this song. Lucky for the world, he’s not as hard to acquire a taste for. He goes down much easier than the sour mash he sings of in the beginning. It goes beyond the scope of alcohol, it relates to everything we come across in life. As songwriter it’s awesome to behold the craft that went into this song and it’s lyrics. It can be difficult to create double meanings that become so powerful, yet Chuck seems to do it with such ease.
It’s that much more powerful to hear it coming from a guy that resembles Sam Elliot the actor. For some strange wacky reason that seems to lend some godlike credibility to him. Maybe that’s why he titled his CD “God Shaped Hole”. Well, maybe not. But it works for me so I’ll stay with it.
Go pick your poison. I hope it’ll be some music – so long as you support the artist that created it.
Have a great day!
