Yesterday in between music creation, I watched a movie called Freakonomics. An interesting look at what could be the driving factor in how things work. Correlations between money and motivation were drawn in several aspects of life. The most interesting one I felt was the correlation between unwanted births and crime. I’ve read before that all people want to be needed and loved. When that happens life is generally happy. While any data can be used to support or debunk any study, it certainly proved to be interesting to watch and think about.
There was a segment on some students where a study was done on whether or not bribing a kid to get good grades would work. One of the students was motivated by the end result. The other was motivated by the end result and by his mom who said she would match the money the school gave out to her son. The student who was not doing well in school but really wanted the big prize worked his butt off. The other student who’s mom would match the program, was not interested in doing anything productive. The one who worked his butt off, got the big prize. The one who didn’t, ended up doing worse.
Far cry from the motivation I remember of school. It was all about getting the good grades. While I wasn’t a studious as my sister, I aced tests and thus did well.
Since I’ve got that movie on my mind and a lot of it was about money as a motivator I’m gonna roll with Did It For The Money by Tesla. While not everyone in the movie did it for the money, a large percentage did. Kick in with some electric guitars sorting through some chords and licks until the volume is turned up and everything amps up to 10 with riffs and pounding drums. Wham, there is hard rock.
Though Tesla got lumped with the Hair Metal bands, I think they stood out as a little different. Maybe it’s the splash of southern rock sensibility or something. Either way, this is one of their older tracks. To me it rocks hard even by today’s standards.
