I’m more than halfway done with the re-encoding of my entire CD library. No small task mind you. What prompted it? I think I’ve already said it here. I’m updating things in life and one of them is the way media is moving about my house. All my CDs will go into storage and I’m encoding them at CD quality (aif, not mp3) to my server. This will help the sound quality greatly. And since all my devices, my phone, my lappy, my studio computer, etc… can control the playback to the stereos, then why have mp3s?
Plus in the update, I’ve now got a closet with the proper power and lines setup to keep the server and wireless setup where it should be. Which means it’s time to do this encoding thing, one last time. I should have done this when I did it the last time. But alas, I did not. Live and learn. All going forward media will get encoded to hard drive at full quality. No sense not too.
Now about the title. As I’m doing this, I’m watching a documentary called Who is Harry Nilsson. More learning. More music history research. I had heard of the guy, but I never actually put two and two together about him. I suppose a lot of it has to do with the fact that he’s way before my time – at the time of the Beatles.
In watching this documentary I’m listening to so many songs that I fully recognize. Amazing songwriting. Things that are being said about him are things that dare I say, I’ve heard directed at me and I’m like sitting here saying to my self – self, you should study this guy’s music more. I do hear some ideas that I do in my music that is probably indirectly influenced by Harry.
What I appreciate is his breadth. His ability to mutate. He was a music machine. Hmmm…
If you are not familiar with Harry Nilsson or even this song. Wow. Time for you to explore a catalog that ended up influencing the Beatles and we know how influential they were.
As you listen to this song, pay attention to the sheer emotion going on. It’s such an amazing song. Pure. Great melody. Great voice. Great words. Great presentation. To sum it up in a word: Wow.
Nothing more to add.
