This morning I got an email from a friend who is currently residing on the opposite side of the world. The message mentioned that he had a dream and that I was the only person in it that he recognized. Considering the sheer number of people this friend knows – I’m flattered. Recently he donated a couple of guitars to me. Again, a very cool gesture considering that he isn’t playing them anymore.
Dreams can be a funny business. I don’t remember dreams often. Actually it’s pretty rare. Though a few weeks ago I had a run of dreams that were waking me up in the middle of the night and all around the same person. First time ever in life that’s happened. Haven’t had any dreams since that run got resolved. Are dreams some sort of method for our brain to work shit out? I have no idea. Knowing the experts in the field and having a chat with them might be enlightening. At some point I’ll get to do that.
Until then, I prefer sleeping without interruption. Maybe I’m missing out on an important factor by not remembering my dreams. Though I don’t really know any different.
One of the best songs I can think of that is about the idea of sleeping and dreaming and the disconnect has to be Sleep to Dream by Fiona Apple. The drum groove that opens the song is so fucking cool it’s ridiculous. I wonder if it was the brainchild of Jon Brion. Sonic colors from all kinds of sounds abound in this song. That most certainly has to be heavily influenced by Jon – he is a master of sound. A musical genius of epic proportions.
Fiona is no slouch of a writer and singer either. Equally matched in her sibling Maude Maggart. A talented group of people, no doubt.
Get out there and live the life.
