I got a call today from a friend who is well know in the event planning business. He’s working on something that is a fairly famous spot in Hollywood that is undergoing a revision. He called to see if I’d be willing to help with the setup of the stage and design of the room for sound. Rather interesting thought to call a musician for such a matter.
Based on the room, and I had played it before a few years ago, I gave my thoughts on best location for the new stage and started asking about the concepts of what they’d be willing to do in order to control sound in the room. That is probably the biggest factor, combining the aesthetic and the functional. Of course most venues side on the aesthetic and don’t give a rats ass about the functional. Which is so weird when they want to make a good sounding live room to listen and see music in.
Anyway, I like the idea. Good thing I learned something about controlling sound in a room last year thanks to a bit of research and the guidance of Paul White from SOS magazine.
Since I’ve been called up for such things I figured I’d feature a spot of live music.
What is more quintessential as a live song than I Want You To Want Me by Cheap Trick? I’m not sure there is. As an artist who has played it live and is working up a cover version to release I can say this is one of my all time favorite songs. I’m pretty sure I’ve hear the studio version, but there is no doubt that it is this version of the song that so many people know and love.
It’s upbeat, it’s playful, and it’s kinda sad all at the same time. The lyrics are sad but the music is so happy. So rock. So cool. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Cheap Trick in several different settings and I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned it here on Single of the Day before how Robin Zander always seems to be spot on with the vocals every time. Then you have Rick with those crazy guitars. The one thing I’ll never forget is seeing them live in a club in Vegas. They were by far and away the absolute loudest band I’ve ever heard live.
I doubt they’ll be too old to turn it down.
Go get it now!
