So I intended to do a post for wednesday and ended up screwing it up. So here is Wednesday’s post…
Oops. There I go again missing a day. I knew I meant to do a couple of posts and this was supposed to be part of that, somehow I missed it. I don’t think it has to do with have too much going on, but rather having things that need to be taken care of that piled up a bit much and left me with much less time than I anticipated. I may need to look at how I’m budgeting my time a little more.
I had a conversation with a friend about that recently. Someone who likes to fly by the seat of their pants – one who makes plans on occasion, only to break them or shift them around on a whim. The kind of thing that drives most people nuts. I’ve stopped making plans with that person. It’s a waste of time. What’s the point of making a plan with someone who doesn’t value the plan?
Which leads me to a Ben Folds tune for today. One of those concept albums. I can’t remember where I picked this CD up, but I really like the story line of the whole thing. In general I have an affection for concept albums where the story line really takes a line. Of course the music has to be there. In the case of Ben Folds Five, it’s all there. Plus it’s kinda quirky too which is great.
In the story line the character has issues of their life. Hmmm, relates to the friend I mentioned earlier.
I dig the way Ben has planned this song out. What’s nutty is that there should be a great song for every single subject in the world. The reality is, there may be, but I haven’t found every one of them yet. But when you need a song about plans, Ben’s gott’em.
I like the lilting nature of the tune. The arrangement is something that ought to be studied at a music class. The way they bring in the instruments to back up the different parts and support the feeling is very well done indeed. More of a theatrical type of thing rather than going for a popular piece. I should heed that myself for something I’ve been working on as well.
If you need a break from the norm of pop, this a great album to pick up. Do it.
maybe i gave it to you? i distinctly remember our discussing it at sonoma blue a few times. i love this record, this tune *and* your analysis.
That’s a possibility. Not sure i really analyzed it.
