Yesterday proved to be a fun and perplexing day.
First, I had worked my saturday in order to gain time to help a friend move. Saturday evening I was told by the friend that my services were not needed. Sunday morning I got a call from my buddy Mike. He wanted to do another bike ride. Of course I had no preset plans so I said yes. He came over and picked me up. My phone had a dead battery so I left it home to charge. Much to the dismay of my friend Mike. Like a lot of people with cell phones theses days, it’s extremely rare that I don’t have my phone with me.
We started out in Santa Monica and proceeded south on the infamous bike path. At first we were to ride to Manhattan Beach then turn around and come back. We got to Manhattan and Mike wanted to continue on to Hermosa. We hit Hermosa and Mike wanted to hit Redondo. Once in Redondo he wanted to continue all the way to zero start marker of the bike path. Somewhere several miles south of Redondo. On we went until we reached the beginning of the bike path.
A brief stop there and then turned around to head back. We stopped in Hermosa for quick bite to eat and a drink. Then back on the bikes and the trek back to Santa Monica where he had parked the car.
I was a little surprised by the fact that it wasn’t extremely busy along the bike path. I mean it is spring break and all. In all the complete round trip was 36 miles. Pretty darn good ride actually. roughly 3.5 hours. Then it was a mad rush home for me to have a short time to hit the store for goodies for game night.
Of course when I got home I had several messages on my phone. Go figure. A Sunday afternoon and suddenly I’m getting phone calls and texts. Maybe I ought to leave my phone home more often. Seems I get to be a bit more popular that way.
I ended up getting baked by the sun. Couple that with the new hairdo and it means I have a red forehead and shoulders. So much for the overcast skies. It means I’ll be slathering on the Aloe Vera gel to stave off the burn.
Which leads me to a friend of mine, Bob Karwin. He’s all about the california sunshine with his music. Very much in the vein of Jimmy Buffet. Since I got a burn from the california sun, I think it’s most appropriate to show off a song about the california sun today. If there is one thing Bob does well it’s him. He has a style that says Bob Karwin. That might sound obvious to most people. However, it’s not as obvious one might think. Very often artists get compared to other artists and more often than not those comparisons aren’t really comparisons but rather the very artists they are copying.
Bob has influences, especially like Jimmy, however it’s not ruling his vibe, it’s only an influence.
This is a remixed, and somewhat rerecorded version of this song. As I’m sitting here writing up the post, the rest of the CD is playing and I’m hearing my voice and guitar playing on several other songs on the CD. I had produced one of Bob’s early CDs when I was first getting my start recording other people. So it’s interesting to hear things I recorded, re-realized.
If you need a soundtrack to a kick back afternoon or want a little bit of that california vibe then you will want to pick up not only this song but also the whole CD. Enjoy!
