The scary movie watching continues. Could this be a parallel for the state of the country? It’s kinda like we’re watching a really bad horror movie right?
I was attempting to think of whether I’ve seen Ghost Ship before. I couldn’t place my finger on it. I sat thru it last night. The premise of the movie is ship controlled by a spirit. Then anyone that attempts to board it and salvage it will likely meet their doom.
Having recently seen The Shining, I will make the connection that Ghost Ship is a poorly written remake of that. Elements of Ghost Ship were really good, then it would get mucked up by something really hokey. The back story wasn’t really alluded to, nor was it explained in a satisfying way. That probably led to some of the movie coming off as bad. Overall, if you’re into horror/scary type things, there’s a few things to cause one to jump. Otherwise, it’s a rental for when you’re bored.
All of that has absolutely nothing to do with today’s choice of Single of the Day. Instead I went for the quirk. Carrie Rodriguez is definitely honing in on the quirk. In listening to her song, I immediately got an idea for how to go about recording something for one of my songs. Sweet, instant creative stimulus. Got to love that.
What I like about this song in particular is the space the recording sits in. It’s very easy to hear it, even in a lappy setup. I dig the pulsing rhythm being setup by the lightly drummed drum. The standup bass is feeling like it’s right in my ear. Almost as if I’m sitting inside the body of the instrument. That’s really cool. The melodic notes appear to come from a muted fiddle, being that she’s a fiddle player, that’s my guess. That’s a very cool use of a fiddle.
Every sound being used is much like paint being swirled about on a canvas in a very deliberate manner. She is definitely painting an audio picture her. It’s not an assault on the senses the way most pop songs are, no, this is a journey into a nifty artistic world.
I feel refreshed hearing the dynamics. It kicks ass.
I have the feeling that my dad would fall over for this. It’s right up his alley. How about yours? Go get Carrie today!
Yeah I liked this
