Judgement day for America could be coming real soon. No, I don’t mean fire and brimstone and all the religious goobbledy gook of zealots. I mean the mettle of a nation is being torn in two or more pieces and so many people are sitting by waiting to see what happens. The real question that has to be asked is, is America as good as it gets?
I suppose I’m curious because of a movie I saw recently. Of all things, My Best Friend’s Girl, starring Dane Cook. Dane Cook’s character kinda represents how America was bumbling around in the world, being the asshole to make everyone else look good (but hoping or thinking they’re right about everything they do). Eventually he wises up in the end and gets his shit together. Will that happen? Will America pull it’s shit together?
A recent discussion with a Dutch friend revealed something that I’ve experienced in traveling abroad and that is most of the world perceives America by the actions of the government. Same could be true of Americans looking out at the world. By no small stretch of the imagination is our government making us look good. In her words: We were saddened by 9/11, but we were quite sure it shouldn’t have led to immediate war, and when it did we were like, oh no – they didn’t just do that… (we in that case would be the vast majority of Europe). I agree. It was fucking stupid. Europeans aren’t dumb. We went after Iraq, for something supposedly perpetrated in Afghanistan?!? It’s all a shell game.
The same can be true for the financial mess we’re now facing. The true losers here are the American people. The ones to be hit by taxes. Ugh… I need to shut up. I’m a musician. I create to bring some sort of entertainment to others. I’m quite sure my opinion won’t sway anyone, so I’ll get back to the music.
Today I feature Stella by Starlight. A band whose buzz is starting to do a little swelling. Their title is what got me started after reading headlines about this “bailout” plan. Like the idea of the bailout, this tune is eclectic. I like the pumping synth riff in the beginning. It’s nothing ground breaking, but it is something that gets my foot moving and my head bopping. I also like the vocal effect. It’s working for me. I will say it’s often bold to feature an instrument that is out of tune. In this case it’s the guitar. It’s off. Lucky for Stella by Starlight that it’s not killing the song.
When I attempted to find Stella by Starlight on the various digital services, I was surprise to find that their band name is a massively popular Jazz song. Not sure of the significance of choosing such a name for a band. But it might help Jazz artists and that’s a good thing.
The video is well produced and I think they’re on to something. What do you think? Is it As Good As It Gets? Then get it legally and get it now!
