Ah, Labor Day. The holiday dedicated to the working people of America and Canada. Imagine that, a non-religious holiday that is shared by two countries. It was first celebrated in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882. At least that’s the word from the Encyclopedia of Britannica. They were always one of the most definitive sources of information during my grade school years. It’s only fitting that I revisit them to check the facts on a holiday.
I’m not sure how having a day off ends up being a way to observe the working people of a country. That’s the interesting thing about holidays. Lots of people observe them by not working, though I’m not sure that outside of a religious holiday that anyone spends the time on that holiday to honor the reason behind it. No, it’s more likely a feeling of woo hoo I’ve got a day off from work, let’s eat and drink.
Seeing as how I’m spending time doing some work on the blog, I guess I’m not doing a very good job of observing a day off. Not yet anyway. Sadly, I have some editing work on a couple of songs that I should get to. Thus I may be working. Yikes. I’ll have to get out of the house to meet some friends and get away from it. A forced day off and I’m in need of forcing myself to not work. 🙂
Thus I’m presenting what I would call one the of definitive odes to work that I’ve heard. It comes from band called Caroline’s Spine. For a group of guys that I’m pretty sure had not worked a 9 to 5 job it’s pretty amazing that they nailed all the clichés related to the 9 to 5 day job. Then again I’m sure it’s quite possible to watch a few TV shows about a work environment and or listen to some fans and be able to draw a pretty good idea of what it’s like.
Moving is what I’d call the guitar riffs in this song. It moves along at a pretty good clip. Very telling of the frenetic pace of an urban day job in a big city. To go work for the man, get a relationship and hope that you don’t get downsized. The day in day out monotony of it all and then seeking adventure is probably more the norm than not the norm. That’s the driving pound of the snare drum as it pounds that life into your skull.
Should I ever become a 9 to 5’er (not likely to happen) this would likely be the song that I would play every morning to get my blood pumping so that I could deal with my day. Wouldn’t you agree?
I feel for the people that hold a regular job like that. This is certainly a great soundtrack for it and wanting to bust out. Go get it now!
