As a musician there’s one thing that can really be said – timing is everything. That can truly be applied to people you meet as well. Sometimes there’s never a right time to meet someone. Other times, there’s probably no wrong time to meet someone and further still there are times where everything has to line up just so.
I was on the phone to a friend today about a song we wrote earlier this week, then the conversation ran into social behavior. We were lamenting about people who you attempt to contact and they never return a message or call. Both of us felt it’s probably one of the rudest things a person can do. Somewhere in the American lexicon and ability to communicate it became extremely hard for a lot of the country to respond and say no.
There’s lots of ‘experts’ out there saying it’s great to be a jerk or unresponsive. To a large extent it’s probably true. I’m sure there’s a large group of people that do respond well to being treated like ass. I suppose that since I take care of myself and my health, I’m one of the few that don’t respond well to actions like that. Sometimes I take a long time to make a judgement. I can be very tolerant about some things. But with matters of communication – that I can’t tolerate.
My friend mentioned that a friend of his once said, if you have time to piss, you have time to return a call. Even if it’s to say, I got the call but can I call you later when I have more time to chat. That makes good sense. Generally I’m really quick with returning a call or text. I don’t like to leave people hanging. It’s just not cool.
What’s your favorite pet peeve in syncing with other people on this planet?
Speaking of syncing… Today’s choice comes from one of my favorite solo acoustic acts. Preston Reed is a phenomenal guitarist. Creates some very captivating rhythmic structures with his guitar. I’ve got to imagine he’s in sync a lot of the time. At least that’s my impression. I love the use of finger tapping and alternate tunings. I did a full acoustic album of stuff like that called “is this considered naked”. Fun disc.
Anyway, if you haven’t been a longtime fan of Single of the Day, then you need to dig back thru the archives and find other posts I’ve had mentioning Preston. Go now and purchase this song. But I really think you ought to purchase the whole disc!
