How many chin-ups can you do? I’m not even sure I know how many I can do. I’m sure its gotta be over two. Which is more than one. Though I’m not sure how many I can do right now as my shoulders are burning. Not literally on fire, but it does feel like they could be lit up with some sort of flame. Why? Well, I’ve started working on a new muscle group for lifting weights and the muscles are telling me I’ve found something they’ve never done before.
Usually I don’t mind finding muscles that haven’t been used before. This time though, it’s affecting my use of my arms. Especially my left shoulder. It took the brunt of the pain for some reason. I’m not sure why. At the moment my range of motion feels like it’s diminished. Not good. I am looking forward to the day – in the next week – when the pain goes away. I’m on the path to shoulder heaven.
Chin-up can also refer to keeping a positive outlook on things. This is my mode of life. Most of the time. However, on occasion, like anyone I can have a little outburst. The interesting thing is that because I’m so far on the positive side if something slips out people around me really notice it. As I was made aware of last night. I curbed it pretty quick. Still it’s odd because I don’t like being negative at all. So it’s nice to be told when it’s happening.
Typing of positive vibes is what led to today’s choice. David was turned on to Single of the Day by another recent artist Jaik. Which always a cool thing. David then contacted me. I always ask artists that I feature (provided I can reach them) to offer their recommendations. It helps. Additionally while I’m thinking about it, I have had non-musicians take the brave step of emailing me and suggesting artists they love as well. Which is great too. In fact early on in the history of Single of the Day I had quiet a few people offering up bands they love. So don’t be shy. I’m a music slut.
Getting back to David. The song that jumped out at me was The Positive. I like the rawer quality of the recording. The vibe. It feels like a good solid rock song. I actually am starting to miss the nature of a quality straight up rock song. Maybe it’s because I was brought up on it around the house.
I can appreciate the jam in the middle of the song where it’s just going on with playing the music and not worrying about the formula of a commercial radio ditty. I sure wish I had been around for the era of radio when DJ’s controlled the music being played and also played what they called deep album cuts. I think radio would be more fun to listen to that way. I suppose it’s that nature that led me to Single of the Day. It’s also why I like having an iPod. It allows me to play albums in their entirety, so I can hear the ‘deep cuts’.
David’s tunes has the deep cut quality.
I will say that I get a vision of the voice of a much more mature John Mayer when I hear David sing. By mature I mean John at say age 50. Not that David is old. I actually have no idea of his age. But that he has that rough hewn nature to his voice that is tuned to bring rock that quality I was referring to. Does that make any sense?!?
Go add Dave to your iPod – legally of course. Experience more than 30 seconds of a “hit” and explore the music. You’ve got time.
