Funny how you make a plan to do something, then something else crops up and things change. It could be an outside influence or a bit of new information. Something that sheds more light that what you previously had.
I discussed a song I co-wrote that was for a movie. I very much liked the original intent we had. Yet, in order to please those in charge changes were made to the tempo and some of the mix. Thus it became something that I wrote only not what I intended. When that happens I let it go and let others push it as they see fit. It’s the only thing I can do. I still have the original and I do like it very much. Thus I can still push my vision of it at a later time. Which is my alternate plan.
Today was to be filled with co-writing with a friend I haven’t seen in a couple of years. However, he’s married and the wife had sometime to say about his time. Thus the plan has now changed. Tomorrow is the day in the later afternoon. Provided no more outside influence comes of it. We already have the lyrics and the general idea of where we’re going to head musically. So it should go quick.
Speaking of writing, or rather co-writing. It’s becoming increasingly odd the way I’ve been doing co-writes as of late. Usually the standard practice is to get together at a single location and interact. Be in the same room as. In the past month, I’ve been co-writing via e-mail, IM chats, file transfers, and phone calls. I’ve got 5 songs in the works like that. Very strange to me. Being that I’m a huge technophile it shouldn’t be. It is. I think I prefer the face to face human contact. Call me silly.
I’m not losing sleep over any of that, but I am adjusting to it.
Writing of sleep. Here’s a number I came across this morning. Sleepless. I had never heard of the band. I discovered them via StumbleUpon.com. I stumbled on the video. I liked it so much I decided it needed to be Single of the Day today. Yeah iTunes. Instant sale. The band name feels more like something I’m doing, waiting until June. I’m not really waiting on something for June, I only get the feeling.
The song kicks off hard with a super hook and a very indie/college rock vibe. I really dig the space created. The arrangement isn’t overblown which I appreciate, especially in light of the things I’ve been going through with some of the songs I’m co-writing where more and more and more and more and more and more stuff keeps getting added and added to the point of overkill and weighing the song down.
Josh, the lead singer has a very pop voice. It’s definitely the drive behind this band. There is no doubt about it. the winning factor is the melody he’s emoting in the songs. Interestingly a couple of weeks ago I was at an industry function where the producer Chris Carter (did a remix of Hero Unexpected) was asked to describe my writing/me. His comment was a modern artist with an insane sense of melody. Maybe that’s why people think I write catchy choruses. Josh has that vibe to him. I don’t know if he’s the only person responsible for his melodies, but they are catchy. Don’t you agree?
Go lose some sleep over these guys. Go get the CD and stay up all night listening. It’ll be worth it, I swear.
