Try as someone might, it’s impossible to be everything to everyone. There are people that try. It’s comical to watch them make that attempt. Especially when they espouse about how brilliant they are in comparison to others. Of course people love to measure themselves against others. It’s human. But to have your whole persona be about it is well, unfortunate.
I only bring it up as a person on a songwriters board I’m a part of, loves to put others down. Loves to tell the world how things like radio, major labels and American Idol are the downfall of brilliant music. In addition said individual will personally attack anyone who does not conform to his view. It’s rather sad. Posting things like that leave the place as somewhere people are less likely to visit. Oh well.
Moving on…
Last night I attended a Rock n Roll Wine Tasting event. Wine tasting parties or events are actually gaining in popularity. Wine makers find it a way to get their wares out into the public. While I’ve never attended one before, I can imagine most wine tasting are nothing like what I experienced. There were a lot of different brands and types of wine. Then there was the music. Live music being performed by a couple of friends of mine from Las Vegas. The concept of the Rock n Roll Wine Tasting started there from what I understand. My friends invited me out.
The fun thing was watching how people progressed through the night. Early on, the wine being poured was into little glasses and in small amounts. Hour and a half later… Wine is being poured in copious amounts and being downed. People went from being sorta prim to being tipsy and letting the hair down.
I leave the real wine expertise to my sister. Whenever I have to get a wine for something, I defer to her. Why not, she works in America’s wine alley. Has designed some winery buildings and whatnot. However, during the tasting I got to noticing subtle differences between some of the wines. It took a while to kick in though. Like I’d have some, then a minute or so later I’d notice the difference. Maybe my mouth is learning. Additionally I’ve never had that much wine in one sitting before. It sure leaves ya feeling good. Like anything though, there’s no one wine for everything.
Which brings me to today’s pick. Daniel Lee Martin. Lets kick up the heels and scoot about the floor. Modern country rock. That’s how I’d label it. A lively beat and a skippin guitar part. Based on last night, I’d almost think that there should be a branch of the wine tasting that includes this vibe.
When I first heard Daniel, I immediately thought of another musician that I know. Bob Karwin. They have a very similar quality in their vocal. Bob has been featured here on Single of the Day. Stylistically there could be some easy cross over between the two. Daniel is much more rooted in the country, and Bob is much more rooted in the Island (Buffett) style. Production wise I’ll have to give the hat to Daniel though. A very clean, very modern approach. Great arrangement and what sounds like top notch players putting a nice touch on the tune. I will admit I haven’t heard Bob’s newest stuff yet.
So go on, be what you can be. Remember you can’t be everything to everybody! Add the song to your library legally, if only to remind yourself of that lesson.
