It’s “reality” TV season again. I don’t actually know that since I don’t own a TV, but who can miss the hype surrounding one of the few shows that isn’t a rerun right now. Of course I’m speaking of American Idol. I don’t have much to say about the show mostly because I’ve watched maybe half of one episode two years ago. Certainly they deal with a vast number of Wannabes. Wannabe rockstars that is.
Essentially it’s like getting into the kitchen sink and throwing the entire box at it, turning around and seeing what floats to the top. Unfortunately it’s not always the best, at least that’s what I’m witnessing from a distance after the fact. You’d pretty much be better off at this point going with a house concert. It’s live. It’s now. It’s probably not even scripted, so you won’t offend the writers guild. Today’s snappy little ditty comes from a house concert site called concertsinyourhome.com. They have a whole lot of information about how to host a concert in your home, plus they have a whole bunch of artists you can hear and book. Pretty amazing. Very intimate.
James comes to recommended to me via Fran Snyder, the mastermind behind concertsinyourhome.com. It’s been a little while since I’ve had a country flair on Single of the Day so I thought it’s a good time to end that drought. James has a very pop sense. I’d call it country pop. The interesting thing about country pop to me is that it feels like its roots come from metal ballads. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the king of those ballads was Mutt Lange. He made a transition into country a few years back with his wife Shania Twain. Hey if I were a top metal producer and had a wife like that, I think it would sway me too.
Anyway, that’s really a whole new category and James is rounding it out nicely. The recording quality is very clean. All the instruments have their place in the mix and nothing feels out of place. It’s got one of those nice bouncy grooves. The requisite backing choir of vocals and call and answers. The real gem of it is it’s upbeat and happy nature. It’s a feel good song. Can’t beat that.
I could actually see this as an American Idol finale song. It’s got all the pop flavor that’s needed. Don’t you agree? Groove got you hooked? Get it, add it to your iPod or whatever mp3 player you’re using. Legally of course.
since i’m an american idol fanatic and i heard the crummy song they HAD to debut last year, i think this song would have been a much better option for each of the singers. you’re right, the hook really catches you and i’ve found myself singing and humming it ever since i first listened. this was a great selection for “single of the day”. i hope to hear more from Casto…chen
