Myspace, Facebook, Friendster, Twitter, Imeem, Ilike, I am. Social network sites. It’s all about the web 2.1384950658. At least that’s what we’re told in the media. So we push and we push to be liked as much as possible by as many people as possible. Attempting to clear that hurdle of a hundred friends. Then a thousand. Then ten thousand and tens of thousands. What does it really mean. It’s a virtual mountain. What good is that?
I wasn’t alive when a man summitted Everest for the first time. However, I read in the news that Sir Edmund Hillary died yesterday. If ever there was a man who went and did something, he is it. Climbed to the top of the world. What an amazing feat. Today people have the latest in technology and gear and many still fail. That’s an amazing testament to Hillary’s ability. I have the utmost respect for that. He was physically doing something. Something damn hard. I suppose that’s why I have this desire to mountain bike from Canada to Mexico via the Rocky Mountains.
Yes, I’m still working on that trek. I’ve got a few people who are waiting to join me in the adventure. I’m looking for more. “Are you insane?” Is asked most of the time. Hm, hm, yes I think is my answer. Would the world move forward without people who are off kilter and somewhat perversely insane? Probably not. Does that make someone hip? I can’t judge.
It’s the act of doing, that gets me excited. I like to do. Be it creating, or getting outside and physically going somewhere. It’s a calming, driving, freeing action – to do. What drives you?
Being fly isn’t goal one. Life likes to deal a trump hand at inopportune times to people that go to job via being fly and only fly for fly’s sake. Paris? Famous fly for being in bed on tape. Britney, well we’ve seen what fly did to her and now her sister. Tom Cruise was fly, then flew off the handle nuts for Katie and is now attempting to regain his fly. Fly will eventually come back to those who are doing something creative for the sake of doing and not for the sake of fame.
The question that begs is, where’s Offspring? They’ve not been fly for a while. Did this song escape your radar? I remember it. Thus it becomes a Fallen Friday for this week. Their troubles began long before the Radiohead of recent months. Fighting with the label, telling fans to steal the music or that they don’t care if people don’t pay for it. I wonder if they still think that way now? Probably a little tougher to make the benjamins meet the bilskis when popularity wanes and fans are encouraged to pilfer.
Despite the previous attitude that Offspring had, I don’t condone you five-finger-discounting the song. If you don’t have it and you dig it – Buy It!
(** Disclaimer: If Offspring’s label decides to fly up in my face about it, I’ll have to hype the audio off the server. The post will remain to show how fly is fly for this white guy. **)
