Reasons, reasons, reasons…
Sometimes we want them. Sometimes we don’t. I can think of a movie right now where a character states there are no reasons. No reasons as to why some people live and some people die. Damn good movie that stars Sean Connery. Extra points if you can comment which movie it is.
Last night I went to see the movie The Mist. I’m a Stephen King fan, so like a good fan I’ll go see movies based on his output. Some are terrible, some are good, some are great. Overall the movie was generally good, it wasn’t great. However… what made last night’s movie going experience horrible wasn’t the movie. It was the audience. I can remember only one other movie experience that bordered on terrible like last night. The first time it happened it was laughable and was likely more the fault of myself and my buddy choosing a not so good theater in New York.
I wasn’t in New York last night, so I can’t give that excuse. There is no excuse for this. I’m referring to people that believe it’s good etiquette to blab incessantly during a movie. Recanting the action on the screen. Talking to the characters about what they’re about to do. Citing how stupid they are for doing something. Exclaiming how brilliant they are for doing something else. This wasn’t like a momentary thing that happened once during the movie, which is acceptable cause we’ve all done that. No, this was constant, during the entire runtime.
It was primarily a woman. I’m not going to discuss much further than that for her description.
Other audience members asked her to shut up. That didn’t stop her. Some gave her glaring looks. Several people got up and walked out. Security came in. Of course, at that point, she shut up. As soon as security left, she started right back up again. I got up and moved as far away as I could about 1/2 way through the movie. There is a fortunate ending. As I walked out, several other people were complaining to management. I decided to toss my feelings into it and management gave us all a pass to come back at another time. Theater solves that issue.
I suppose my question is… What reason do people who do this give? Why do they find it so necessary to commentate to a room of strangers who paid $10.50 to see a movie? It’s not your living room.
As for today’s artist, I’m betting they’d have good reasons to go postal in a situation like that. Then again, maybe not. I will choose them for Fallen Friday though. I never really got that far into them, mostly because I couldn’t decide what I thought about the name. Say it with me, Hoobastank. What is that? Anyone know the reason behind the name? I don’t. I’ve not seen them live. It would be interesting to know if they live up to their recorded material.
I do like this song though. I’m sure a lot of people liked the song. It was a major hit for them. I like the ascending guitar line. It’s simple. It’s cool. The vocal melody is drawn out and searing. It tears into you. I like that too. The whole thing builds into a very epic sounding song. Epic is good. The question is, will they ever get back to the height they reached with this one?
Don’t have a reason? Get the song anyway. The reason? Because I said so. Just pay for it.
(** Disclaimer: If Hoobastank’s label decides to give me a reason to be scared, I’ll have to get my axe ready like they did in the Mist and axe the audio from the server. The post will remain as a reason to understand why people blab in movies. **)
