Ah a rare monday morning. Actually monday’s aren’t really rare, they happen every seven days. So it’s sorta circular in that respect. What’s rare about it is that I’m showcasing a song, but the iTunes link for it goes to the band that originally wrote the song. Why would I do this?
First off, let me say that I’m not really sure who the artist is that recorded this version. Not with 100% absolution. I’m probably 90% sure that it’s The Tories that came up with this rendition. I had a brief time hanging out with a friend named Kevin Packard. He is thoroughly into the power pop genre and he played me some stuff. One of the songs that he played me was this one. He told me at one point who it was and I’m pretty sure it was The Tories. However, it’s not available on any release they’ve done – otherwise I’d be sure exactly who did it.
Not long after that, I got a call from Bob Borbonus at Taylor Guitars asking if I’d be interested in playing guitar with Steve Bertrand. I said sure that would be cool, so Bob gave my number to Steve who promptly called me not long after. He was starting a new band and was looking for a bassist and a second guitarist. We chatted for a bit and left it at looking to get together to play a little. Another friend of mine, Seth Horan (a brilliant bass player – and someone I need to showcase here on SOTD) was also asked, but I don’t know if he ever spoke with Steve. I did pass Seth’s number on to Bob and Steve.
I never did hear back from Steve. He did go on to some notoriety with his new band. So that’s my brush with The Tories. In case you’re not following the connection, Steve was the guitarist and vocalist in The Tories.
It’s not often when I hear a cover song and go “WOW!” But such is the case with this one. It’s so damn good that I love it. It’s better than the original in my opinion. The original is good too, but this is so cool with it’s arrangement and change of the beat. They took it and made it theirs. Which is the point of doing a great cover song.
Since I can’t find where you can purchase this version, I’m linking to the version by RATT. They wrote it, they deserve the reward. I’ll have to feature their version sometime.
Also, if you know that this isn’t The Tories, but you know who it is – do tell me.
