Ah yeah, another version of Fallen Friday. I guess it’s a factor of the 70’s. So it’s not so much they’ve fallen but rather are fading. But in music history, Earth Wind and Fire will likely be rememba’d for some pretty darn great music.
For me, I have a very early morning tomorrow. I’m to make a phone to the east coast at 6 a.m. my time. Which means I probably need to set my alarm for 5:55 a.m. Ouch. The question is, can I achieve this goal? Will I be able to wake up enough to make the call? The short answer is, I betta. I suppose it could mean that I shouldn’t use my normal bed time of 2 a.m. Might need to call it a little earlier than that. One thing about the music and entertainment business, it’s not on a normal schedule.
I read something sad yesterday. Something which will likely cause a few people to remember September. Seems I wasn’t the only person to have a difficult day for running on Wednesday. Turns out that there was a girl running a cross country race here in California. A standard 5k run, which equates to roughly 3 miles. Seems she got to about 2/3 in (2 miles) and then collapsed. Unfortunately she did not survive despite the attempts of her coach and the paramedics to revive her. The initial diagnosis for her collapse and death is dehydration. Though an autopsy is being done to make sure.
That’s kinda eery in a way. I was about 2/3 into my run, though the distance was a bit further. I didn’t collapse, but boy it sure tuckered me out. Maybe there was some weird lack of humidity in California on Wednesday. You wouldn’t know it today though – covered in clouds and it looks like rain is coming back. I think I’ll rememba Septemba as being the first time I quit in the middle of a run.
I can’t rememba the first time I was exposed to Earth Wind and Fire. But I do rememba hearing this song a lot when I was hanging with Jeff Scott Soto as the singer for the Boogie Knights. Disco baby. It gets girls dancin on on the dance floor. Which in turns brings out the playa’s in force. Of course being backstage, drinkin and peep watchin was fun. Every so often I’d be out in the audience and I’d hear my name being shouted over the PA. Generally when the guitar player had a problem. Since they didn’t have a tech, I’d help out. Or sometimes I’d be given the guitar to play. Fun times.
One club, which shall remain nameless, was upset about something at the end of the Boogie Knights show. It was their final night there. As per usual, I was brought on stage to close the set, singing and playing guitar. The bouncer wasn’t to pleased with people getting on the stage and started pulling people off. People the band brought up. Next thing I know, I’m being grabbed and escorted off the stage when Jeff gets a hold of me and tells the bouncer, no way. It was like being a rag doll in a tug-o-war. Moments later the power was shut off and the curtains came down. The club ended the night early.
The audience was confused. Pandemonium broke out backstage and we were threatened with being arrested. Within hours we were kicked out of the hotel. So much for the after party. Oh the fun of final performances at a club.
While that had nothing to do with Earth Wind and Fire personally, it’s part of the memories that I have of disco music, since I wasn’t around for the original disco era. The song is still worth owning, dontcha think?
(** Disclaimer: If EW&F’s label decides to help me rememba Septemba for something else, I’ll have to boot the audio off the server like my story. The post will remain to show what some of my Septemba memories are. **)
