Did you ever go into something knowing you’re about to make a mistake and still made it?
If so, why did you do it?
I find it amazing that people, including myself, will do things even though they know the outcome is going to be something they didn’t expect. Interestingly enough it happens an awful lot in music. But most people are not musicians. So what are those mistakes and why do they get made? The simple answer is: we are human. It’s the Act of being human that implies that we will make mistakes.
With music I can hear the ideas in my head. It’s the translation of what I hear in my head that sometimes gets jumbled upon its creation. Sometimes said jumble results in a mediocre song. Other times that jumble results in something that transcends the original intent. That’s when music can be totally magical for the creator.
I can’t fool you into thinking that’s what Sheryl Crow intended when she wrote this song. Lyrically speaking it’s about a relationship between people. Many of us have had relationships with someone else where we knew it was a mistake yet we still kept going back. I’ve done it. I’m willing to bet you’ve done it to. Right?
I wasn’t a fan of Sheryl Crow initially, however that has since changed. She has an amazing knack to writing a song. Actually I think it’s her knack to writing a chorus. It doesn’t hurt that she surrounds herself with amazing musicians. That is a smart musician. But even the smart musicians make mistakes.
What is your favorite mistake?
(** Disclaimer: If Sheryl’s label decides I’ve made a big mistake, I’ll have to correct it with deletion of the audio from the server. The post will remain to show I think some mistakes are golden. **)
