Normally I’d put something like this up on a friday for my Fallen Friday segment. However today is different. I had something happen today that hasn’t happened in an awful long time and I figured this is a good moment for thinking about Staying Alive.
I went for a run this morning and based on my previous week and monday, I decided to continue with the distances I’ve been doing. I got off to a nice pace to start and got a good two-thirds (about 4.5 miles) into the run when I suddenly had an issue with getting way too warm and pasty mouth. I was dehydrating at a pretty rapid rate. So I began looking for someone with a sprinkler on. Unfortunately I was unable to find one. Not soon after I had to stop running. Talk about disappointing.
I hate quitting. But I found that I had hit a wall and no amount of pushing was going to allow me to continue, at least not running. I can’t remember the last time I actually had to stop running for any reason. My body this time though was saying don’t get stupid. I didn’t check the weather before the run, though I did when I got back. Bingo, I got so used to the cooler temperatures that I didn’t account for the higher temperature. It’s back to normal summer heat.
I’ve read studies that claim heat is not a factor in outdoor exercise. However, I certainly they’re full of shit. While I so wanted to complete the run, it wasn’t in the cards today. Damn heat. Good thing I downed a lot of water when I got home.
Rather than dwell on the negative of having to stop the run, I should dwell on the fact that I listened to my body when it said time to survive. Better to be alive than to pass out in a street.
The Bee Gees are most likely a household name. There probably isn’t much I can say about them that people would know. I don’t know all that much other than they were huge in the 70’s. Major disco hits. Also, I believe they’re the very first artists to ever use a drum loop. It may even be this song that it was on. It supposedly came from a Barbara Streisand song. I saw/heard that on a VH1 type behind the music thing once. If anyone knows the truth behind that little tidbit, do leave a comment.
(** Disclaimer: If the Bee Gees label decides to threaten my staying alive, I’ll have to parch the audio off the server. The post will remain that I prefer to live. **)
