Sometimes you see a friend get lucky. They get lucky and you hope it’s going to last for them. See (pun intended from today’s title) over the weekend I went to Hermosa Beach to hang with some friends I hadn’t seen in a few months. It was a good casual day. The temperature was fantastic however at the table I sat at at Hennesey’s I happened to be in the sun. By the time several other friends arrived I was apparently melting. I wasn’t hot but my forehead was dripping and I was sweating into my eyes. Being that I had just had my hair cut that morning, whatever hair goop that was used to style it was also dripping into my eyes and stinging quite good. Thus I was spending time mopping my brow with napkins until it was determined the entire group was ready to move to a new location.
Back to the luck. One of the people in our group that day was a woman from Canada (a little town known as Nelson – bonus points to those who know what movie was filmed there) who now lives in Southern California. At first glance I think it’s pretty easy to say that most males who are alive would find her extensively easy on the eyes. Turns out she’s my friends new love interest and for good reason. She’s smart, good looking, easy going, can level you with her eyes, and well… just plain cool. In fact it’s kinda shocking cause she’s not his normal girl friend type, but that’s a good thing.
At one point in the day the new mystery woman in the clan noticed that all 7 of us had green tinted eyes. Interesting observation actually. Technically 2 of us had hazel but they’re green in dominance. Observance is something I like to be, but that one had escaped me. Of course once it was pointed out the entire conversation shifted to eyes and their color for probably a good ten minutes. Another plus for the friend, she’s good at conversation starting/shifting.
To put it bluntly, we’re all excited for him.
Exactly what Bette Davis Eyes are I don’t know. However, I know that the song itself is a powerful memory. I can say right now that my buddy’s new girl left an impression on me that I won’t forget. Some people just seem to be able to do that. Why is that? Anyway, I can remember an early memory of my car driving in the car blasting this song bopping her head and singing along. That kind of thing also leaves an indelible memory on the psyche of a kid. Doesn’t it? It did me. That’s why I own the song. Music has a great way of pulling powerful memories out of us. Which is exactly what this song does.
Kim has an intense voice. That’s certainly one of the great qualities about it. It’s a very smokey quality that is extremely sexy. While I give it a lot of thought as to what I would want in a woman, I’ve never actually discussed the voice. Generally its the height, the eyes, the hair, the face. Right now, I’ve just realized it’s also the voice. If a voice can level you just like the eyes can then I think it’s something I have to add into the mix. How retarded of me in that being a musician and working with sound all the time that I never gave that much thought until now. Add another neurosis to my list.
A force to reckon with, it seems Kim is still very productive in the music world. She’s been writing in Nashville with many of the most recognizable names in country songwriting like Jeffrey Steel, Tanya Tucker and more. That’s damn impressive. That’s called a career to be desired. Especially for longevity. Let it be known, that I would be more than happy to see what kind of song I could end up co-writing with Kim. Albeit, it wouldn’t be country if I’m involved. Well it certainly wouldn’t be traditional country anyway. I’ll add that to my todo list.
Despite the dated vibe of the production the song is still powerful. Maybe that’s the point of Bette Davis Eyes. It could very well be that Bette Davis had extremely powerful eyes. Now if the eyes and ears agree make sure you add it to your library the legal way.
(** Disclaimer: If Kim’s label decides to focus their Bette Davis Eyes my way, I’ll have to put the audio in the sand. The post will remain to show that I’m rooting for my friend and his new love. **)
