I have a strong feeling that 50 Cent isn’t going to make good on his promise to quit. Days after he throws down the gauntlet he goes on CNN to say that he’s burned out of music and has no desire to write. A day after someone releases a statement saying 50 already has another album in the can ready to be released. Now there’s a hidden stipulation to his challenge to Kanye that if in the second week of sales Kanye’s sales drop off by 70% 50 will decide to continue with his skill set. It’s akin to the kid in the playground that spouts and pouts about something but was apparently holding his fingers crossed behind his back.
You know I never understood what the crossed fingers thing was supposed to mean. Anyone know why crossing your fingers when you say something as a kid allows you to take back what you said?
Either way, the shits getting pretty deep in the faux rap wars and it’s time to get a shovel.
Before I get my shovel out I gotta say that I spent some time last night working with the new version of Logic to mix the final version of Jupiter Bowl. Man I’m diggin some of the new features. Still a little disoriented with where a lot of my favorite functions are, but it’s very slick. If it’s any indication, I was up until 3:30 a.m. and had to finally tear myself away from the mix before I ended up staying up all night. Something I know would come back to haunt me today. Though it didn’t help when the neighbors dog started barking at 8 a.m.
Digging into Staind. They had a pretty run didn’t they? They make it as today’s Fallen Friday. There were several bands that had this vibe going. The part that got them to stand out for me actually was the name. Staind. I always remembered the fact it’s misspelled. I never understood the significance of that. What I did like was the nature of their grooves. In this song in particular it’s the running of the harmonics up and down the low guitar string. Not a new thing by any stretch of the imagination. Lots of guitar gods of the 80’s did it. Hell even guitarists in the 60’s and 70’s did it. What gets it to work for Staind? I don’t know. Being a guitar player I’m just a geek for hearing all the guitar tricks I learned as I was learning to play. Provided they’re done with musical taste. If it’s done just for the sake of doing it, it becomes pointless.
I don’t know the circumstances as to why they quit, but I guess they wanted to go out while they had a good run without fading into the distance. Or maybe there was another factor. Seems I remember some kind of nasty story about one of the band members. Eh, I don’t remember enough to know. Anyway, I’m going to continue to dig my way through Logic and prepare for my cleanup of the mess I spoke about the other day. Bang On!
(** Disclaimer: If Staind’s label decides to start flinging mud at me, I’ll have to tamp the audio off the server. The post will remain to show I can’t believe the hype. **)
