In case you were hiding under a rock in Syria yesterday I’m here to follow up on the broo-ha-ha that surrounds Apple. Oh Steve Jobs how I could say I love thee. Let me count the ways…
As any normal tech company is want to do they progress. Yesterday was no different. All new iPods were announced. Every model updated and even one more added, the iTouch. Didn’t see that coming?!? Of course Apple would release an iPhone without a phone. It’s highly logical. Personally I’m surprised Apple didn’t delete the whole line and go only with iTouch. Maybe that’s a bit overboard. I actually like my shuffle for exercising with. I still like my video iPod for when I’m out and about and people ask what I sound like or what my video looks like. Ooops, excuse me, it’s now the iPod Classic, not video iPod.
Right after all the lovely Apple music news, Steve introduced K.T. Tunstall to the stage to work her musical magic (yes her name is a link as she was featured on Single of the Day not long ago). Between the iPod Touch and Ms. Tunstall came a little announcement that has stirred up a great deal of noise around Steve, Apple, and the iPhone. The price of the 8 gig iPhone has dropped $200.
As an Apple fan I’m actually excited that I didn’t jump on the iPhone right away. There were a number of factors as to why I didn’t jump on it the day it came out (many of my friends know I wanted to). With all the research and feedback I’ve done on it now, I will bide my time until the day it’s actually a phone that works with all the features an old-school “smart” phone should have. I’m guessing that will be around June of 2008. I expect by then it will be a 32 gig iPhone with 3G and GPS, of course that’s just my theory. At the very least it will have all the functions I currently have and actually be faster for data connectivity.
In the meantime all the news is afire with those who purchased the iPhones in the 2 months prior to yesterday’s price drop. Lots of people are very unhappy. Steve Jobs retorts, that’s technology folks. As if it wasn’t to be expected. A buddy of mine who jumped on a now discontinued 4 gig iPhone was in a sour mood yesterday. He was upset his phone was no longer a current model. Upset that ringtones would cost an additional $0.99. Upset that he spent $200 more on the phone that it was now worth. Upset Apple hasn’t added simple functionality to the phone yet. On & on. What did he get for those 2 months? The ability to brag he had an iPhone.
Anyway, I’m glad my update cycle for a lot of my Apple tech has swung away from the bleeding edge curve it used to be on. I’m sure one day it will return. Until then I will say that Apple still makes great products. I know I’ve been burned by product releases before. It’s why I started following Apple’s events and release cycles. To always be patient until the new cycle started.
How does this relate to Johnny’s all-time most recognized song? Well, a lot of Apple followers do that following with a cult like reverence. Myself included. It’s a love/hate thing. While Apple doesn’t always burn their early adopter customers, it can happen. Happen it did yesterday. I fully understand why people feel burned. However, that’s part of the price of early admission. Once in a while we all end up paying it.
I figured since I’ve done several videos this week, I’d keep with the video theme. This is an old 1960’s live rendition of Johnny performing his classic. If you don’t actually own the song, the link is to the classic studio version. Do yourself a favor and hop in the ring. Take the plunge. But the music.
[…] I found another blog post that puts the broo-ha-ha around Apple to music. It’s over at Single of the Day. […]
HA! Remember when we talked at that show I went to? We talked about the iPhone and I had a feeling something like that would happen (with the 4G being discontinued.. not that I knew that specifically, but.. you know..) That is why it is not always wise to jump onto the new, spiffy product, even if your pocket is screaming that it wants to be friends with the newest Apple device to grace the shelves. The iTouch. Yeah, that’ll be mine. In a year, when they work out the bugs. And the price drops. Everyone can say they got… Read more »
And you remember that conversation? Wow!
