Sometimes an artist/entertainer forgets about the stuff they actually create. I’m sure you’ve probably heard the recent news of Owen Wilson. Let’s take a look at it. Here’s a guy that is on top of the Hollywood world at the moment. For women he’s an attractive guy. For guys he’s the cool slacker with humor. It would be the average assumption to think that Owen was a happy guy. Thus the news of him having a bout with depression is a bit stunning. Especially when it comes from a spat with a buddy. It doesn’t make me think any less of him. We all get down (ahem).
Being that I’ve had some pretty major ups and downs recently, I’d say that I should take note of a song that I’ve written myself. The one you’re hearing right now “All The Things”. The premise behind it is that you can’t let what others do or say get you down. Easier said than done. Even I forget the wisdom in my own songs from time to time. With this past week or rather 8 months going as it has it’s a wonder I haven’t had a need to head to cedar’s like Owen did.
One of the best quotes or praises I ever got was from a listener at a radio station who called in after this song was aired and I was on the phone. He told the DJ that he was having a really shitty day until he heard this song. He said it turned his whole day around. I don’t know if you can imagine how cool it was to hear that something I wrote turned another persons day from shit to shine. Anyone reading this know Owen? I’d be happy to get him a copy of the song to brighten his day.
In other news I’d like to pass it along to you that I’ve noticed that CD Baby is now offering the option to purchase a CD in MP3 format. It hasn’t been officially announced but it is on the pages of the artists you find. Initially the price is set to the same price as the physical CD, but the artist has the option to price it however they want (that’s empowering). Thus if you click the CD link for the song today, it will take you to the CD Baby page where you’ll see a link for the MP3 version of the album. I’ve already set it to be cheaper than the physical CD.
Things to know about the CD Baby MP3 album stuff. One, it’s the whole album, you can’t purchase the individual tracks there. Two, the MP3s are DRM free!! You can’t beat that. Which means you can play them on any MP3 player on the market. Three, the songs/album is encoded at 200 kbs rate, meaning it’s pretty darn high quality compared to iTunes, eMusic, ect… Even higher than iTunes coming DRM free stuff. Four, the artist will get 91% of the purchase price. Thus if you purchase an MP3 album on CD Baby for say $10, the artist would get $9.10 of that sale. Everyone wins all the way around.
Out of curiosity, if you knew the Single of the Day artist was on CD Baby and had the MP3 album for sale, how would you like it denoted here on Single of the Day? Let me know.
