How long could you hold your breath? What could get you to hold it longer? Should you hold it longer? Is the risk worth it?
The concept of don’t hold your breath is a great line. It’s very much the same as saying don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
If there is one industry in this world where those statements are the penultimate of true it’s the music industry. I’m a great example. Considering the past eight plus months has been an exercise in futility. Rather than whine I’ll just say that today is supposed to be the day that starts that turnaround. Tomorrow could be a very happy day. But I’m not gonna hold my breath, and I’m not going to ask you to either.
The same could be true for matters of the heart when two people are in a relationship. The concept of jumping off to see if you’re going to survive is paramount. Falling without a parachute and hoping you survive isn’t one of the greatest things in the world. That’s the gist of being on the edge and hoping that the other person will stick with you and want you back. Thus the heart of Duncan’s song.
I remember when I first heard the song it was wimpy to me. I was helping someone else learn to play guitar and they really really really really really wanted to learn this song. So I had to sit down and pick it apart to show them how to achieve it. It was after I had learned how Duncan chose his chords and put them together that I gained an appreciation for the song and for him.
Duncan’s success appeared to be short lived. At least at the top of the charts. I know that he had another song that he released, which was likely off of a second album, or a recently album (I haven’t really followed his career) that I really dug. Duncan isn’t the most unpredictable songwriter, but he is definitely a solid songwriter. Chances are he’s still writing songs and making a good living with music because of that.
What’s been your biggest moment of holding your breath? Share.
