Who amongst us don’t have dreams? Probably very few. I have to wonder though, I don’t often remember any dreams I have when I sleep. I’ve heard some people remember tons of stuff from their sleep. I’m not one of them. Most of my dreams are stuff I think up while I’m awake, but its not daydreaming type stuff – at least not where I’m lost in my mind and out of the real world. Do you dream?
Being a movie buff, I tend to watch all kinds of movies. A good cheap thrill of a horror series is the Nightmare on Elm Street stuff. What’s better than a group of teenagers in a small town who suddenly start dying because of a burned freak in their dreams. For as we all know, if you die in your dreams, you die for real. Right? At least that’s what Hollywood has us believe. Even in the Matrix – which is a bit like a dream state, if you die in the Matrix, you die for real. Go Figure.
I’m not sure if Dream Warriors was from Elm Street part three or not, but I do remember when I first rented the movie and heard the song. I was like yeah. I dig that. Hey, I was learning to play guitar and I liked George Lynch as a player. A lot of those 80’s guitar players were rock gods. Just as much as any 60’s or 70’s guitar gods. Only it was all about image in the 80’s. The bigger the hair, the weirder the guitar, the bigger the amp. It all mattered, to them it did. I missed that boat. I merely liked the playing they did.
Keep your precious amps away from George. I once read that he has a tendency to borrow ones that he likes. Borrows them as indefinitely as he can. Probably not true, but it makes for a good story. I’ve also seen the video for this song. You can too at YouTube. The coolest part, is George’s guitar. Like I mentioned in a previous post. That skull and crossbones guitar is neat. I do have to wonder if it really is as cool to play though. I could imagine that the carving could actually chew up your arm as you play it, I guess only George would really know.
Dokken as a band is doing what a lot of bands from that era are doing now. Putting their pieces back together, writing new material and attempting to revive a career. While I think Dokken had their place. I’m thinking it’s probably best to leave it alone. I could be wrong. However, I’m going to retain my right to say they are a perfect candidate for Fallen Friday. They had some fun songs. I’ll always remember my formative guitar years where I spent time listening to 80’s shred guitarists and this was one of them.
If you’re not familiar with Dokken, and you happen to dig this song. I suggest digging a bit deeper into their catalog. There’s quite a bit of the neo-classical cool hard rock riffs that made them famous.
(** Disclaimer: If Dokken’s label attempts to give me scary dreams, I’ll have to go all Neo on the audio and erase it from the server. The post will remain to show that dreams are important to our health. **)
