I figure I’ll cap of the week with a song that is probably the only song I know of that is about God talking to, or rather warning, Moses. At least that’s what I’m thinking it’s about for this edition of Fallen Friday. And since I was talking about the universe and the sun and stars and space movies, it’s kinda connecting that I end with the heavens. Isn’t it? I’m not even religious enough to know.
This is an example of a cross-over song. In the music biz, so many artists get pigeon holed into a certain genre. So all their songs tend to fit into a specific mold in order to fit the genre and not rock the boat (pun intended) so to speak. A cross-over song means that it’s specifically for one genre but ends up tracking well in several genres. I’m pretty sure that Jars of Clay is a christian rock band. I don’t know a lot of christian rock groups, but this is one of them.
To me christian rock feels like an underground type of genre. At least its not heavily promoted to most of the world as being blatantly christian. However, there really is a major circuit for this type of music that is practically a subset of the music business in and of itself. Those that know christian music and are christians probably follow it pretty religiously (again pun intended).
Actually one of my most favorite bands in the world was a christian metal band. No, not Stryper. King’s X. They were around long before I got into the age of music. Thankfully they kept going without ever really hitting it huge. Eventually it came out that Doug, King’s X’s singer, is gay and poof away went their christian title and thus they were just a heavy rock band. I guess being gay isn’t openly accepted in that genre of music.
Back to Jars of Clay. Anyway, how weird would it be to be Moses? There you are, putting through life minding your own business. Could be like anyone else who looks up to the skies at night and figures what is life all about and why are there so many stars? Then you hear a booming voice and maybe think oh my, it’s aliens and instead it’s God. He’s telling you that you best start building a big ass boat and collecting two of every animal on the planet cause there’s a flood coming. In most of the stories I see that includes birds and ducks and such. Kinda weird since they can float on the water, but whatever.
That’s the gist of this song, the story of a man who is asked to save a few creatures to start the world anew. A anew. That’s pretty much how I feel now that the illness is pretty much kicked and gone. Woo Hoo!
Even if you’re not christian, it’s still a darn good song – get it now.
(** Disclaimer: If Jars of Clay’s label decides to rid the world of me, I’ll have to flood the server and drown the audio. The post will remain to show my quirky story and that I’m back to being healthy. **)
Something about this song cut me to the core when I was in college. I loved the music and the passion behind it. It was intense as was I, so I felt an immediate connection with it. About 7-8 yrs later I bought the CD and only then, after listening, I realized they were a christian group………….other than U2, I never listened to anything like that. Well things have changed a lot since then. I listen to Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, Pillar, Toby Mac, Kevin Max, DC Talk, Jeremy Camp, Flyleaf, Relient K, Sanctus Real, BarlowGirl and a LOT more……………..actually… Read more »
Interesting. I’ll have to look into that.
As for those other artists, I really wasn’t aware of them being Christian either.
I hadn’t realized you’d done anything about Jars of Clay! I LOVE them!! My favorite Christian group is the David Crowder Band. Crowder incorporates things (musically of course) which blow my mind. This preconceived notion people have about Christian music is hilarious. It’s not all hymns, stuff Grandma would listen to. There are many different genres, proof that there is life outside of 50 Cent and Rhianna. (I swear, thats all that is ever on the radio.) (I’m not one to correct people… but it was actually Noah who built the ark. Moses led the people out of Egypt and… Read more »
Hey, I love King’s X and they were considered to be a christian band as well. Right up until the point that the singer came out of the closet. He’s one of the greatest rock singers ever.
I’ll have to listen to David Crowder.
